This is a completly noob question but i wanted to confirm before i messed things up. I have a Voigtlander 15mm lens in LTM mount that i would like to mount on my newly acquired Leica CL. I was looking for LTM to M mount adapters on ebay and nearly all of them specify a lens/lenses to be used with said adapter. Does this really matter with the 15mm? I know the DOF is huge but i still end up guesstimating focus distance when i use it. I've wondered about getting rid of it for a M mount version, but it seems silly to spend a extra $150 for a mount that i can buy on ebay for $15 (i don't use filters). Plus i have to get a seperate finder.

So i guess the question is am i overly fretting about nothing??

LTM to M adapters specify a lens. That determines which frame lines will be brought into play by the adapter, not whether the lens and adapter will mate. Since you will be using an external vf, you can ignore the issue of focal length -- all will work, but....

I have both cheapo eBay ones, Leica ones, and others.

Some cheapo eBay ones will not lock in on some M bodies. I have several that will do it on my M2 but not M3, or on my RD1 but not film Leica or vice versa. don't know if others have found a regular pattern w. these.

Some have found adapters from particular vendors to work. In addition to eBay and Leica, of course, you have Cameraquest, possibly others.

Thanks!!! I guess the material the adapter is made is important (aluminium vs brass etc). I'll have to try the ebay ones first since i'am cleaned out with the CL purchase. Again thanks for the clarification.

Actually -- I think it is the thickness of the adapter that is the issue. So precision in manufacture is important.

try to get a response about which sellers sell ones that work on eBay. Either by using the google search feature (not RFF's) or by posting w. that question.

Sorry I can't help.

The adapter shouldn't really matter with the 15mm ... I would imagine any would do as the depth of field with the 15mm is huge and you're restricted to scale focusing with the LTM version anyway.

You can use any adapter with the 15mm as you don't need to worry about bringing up any frame lines. Personally I use the adapters by Voigtlander which I have never had any trouble with - they are fairly cheap too.

An adapter of the right thickness is most important with the 15; the wider you go, the more sensitive picture quality becomes wrt flange to film distance variation (even though DOF grows).

So I recommend Voigtlander or Leica adapters.

works perfectly on the CL, that is why I first bought mine in 1999!!

The depth of field is great, but the depth of focus is not. That is the depth of focus at the film plane. I like my lenses properly registered, so I got my adapters from cameraquest.com so that I know they are correct.

(It's something of a rule - shorter lenses have more critical depth of focus (film plane) than longer ones.)
