I do not know every detail of this case, but from the handful of news reports that I have read, this sounds beyond bizarre! Umida Akhmedova is a documentary photographer from Uzebkistan who has been charged with defaming the country in her new book of photographs and of trying to show Uzbek life in a negative light! She faces six months in jail! or three years of labor. From what I see, her work is not unlike what most of us aspire to produce. I'd be proud to have taken those photographs!

Here's a quick Google on her.
A link to the BBC report.
And a writeup at the CPJ website.

I do not know what anyone can do beyond spreading the word and signing petitions and such, but maybe something is better than nothing.

The Uzbekh government is not famed for its rationality or progressivness. I'd already seen the pics on the BBC and thought they were great.

Thought: what if we all buy a copy?

I think I'll try...

Cheers,

R.
