The gold one is pretty much the most tasteless camera in existence, both from an aesthetic and political viewpoint.

And would it have killed them to make the lens cap match?
 
I like the MP... they've made it more stealthy by removing the Red Dot...

China is a horrid country in terms of civil freedom. I've never been but I've read enough to get the gist of what's going on there.

But The Orient is one of Leica's largest markets. They're just trying to make a dime. Hopefully to keep the M9 production room going. I don't think creating a Chinese special edition is honoring Chinese fascism. I think it's more just acknowledging that its been there for 60 years.
 
Tiananmen Square carried deep cultural and social currency in China even before 1989, which is why the protesters chose it as a rallying spot in the first place.

To my eyes it's quite ugly and garish, but then again so are most of the luridly overpriced special production runs for wealthy sheiks, sultans, and the like. Business as usual for Solms.

I doubt if you can buy one even you are rich enough. For that limited amount, it could be easily used as gifts for government officials.
 
Maybe this is part of leica's new 5 year plan to make a great leap forward in china and lead the company down a shinning path of equality and prosperity
 
Being a Chinese and having lived there for 19 years, actually I had never realized it's such a horrible place to live until people told me so. After I left home, my mom told me youtube got censored. It is too bad because I spend a lot of time on it, discovering the works of independent musicians and film makers. I don't know how I'll live without it after I get back home.

Indeed we talk much less political stuff in China than here in France. However I'm still not feeling the air of liberty because I was simply not interested in it (besides, I'm not sure if I'd have to go to jail had I said something bad about the government), like many people in China I would say. Maybe that's a difference of culture and the reason most Chinese people have no problem with the government, unlike many people in France with the Sarkozy administration.

The Tiananmen massacre was sad. But what happened happened. And honestly, I don't have any trouble sleeping at night. Maybe I'm just stupid, or a horrible person but haven't realized it yet...

Now back to the topic, they are really ugly cameras. I like the concept of minimalism. If I get rich enough some day, I would buy a standard MP with the Leica engravings removed (as well as 75mm framelines).

A bit of an understatement.

No, you didn't realize what a horrible place it is/was because you were systematically lied to by the government. A government that told you, for example, that Tibetan is a dialect of Chinese and that Tibet has always been part of China. Read history: China was once a vassal state that paid tribute to Tibet. Read the Zhol Doring in Lhasa (Long Stone, dating from the 8th century C.E.): "Whereas the Chinese people are happy in China, and the Tibetan people are happy in Tibet..." (It may be the other way around; that's from memory).

The Chinese Empire will collapse. With any luck, in my lifetime. Then the 60% of the land area of 'China' that is in fact other countries (Tibet, Uighurstan, Mongolia...) may be free. The only hope is that it happens without too much bloodshed.
