For those tired of the Stockton-Powell-Market St. meander stuff, how about a wander up to Sacramento? There has to be something up there worth seeing-photographing, right? (just joking Sactoans).

Just thought I'd throw it out there. Steve and Bob, any good people events or interesting locations in mind?

Edit: I can seat 4 comfortably in the Honda of Doom (my car).

The Railroad museum is suppose to be great. I also have been to the Crocker estate, it is near the Capital and very classy, plus the Old Town, also nearby. This is the Crocker estate:

It's been over 15 years since I visited the Railroad museum or Old Town. I need to be back in the Bay Area by 5 pm on the 20th, but I am free in the morning or on the 21st.
 
Yes, of course there are good places to shoot here in Sacto! Why else would bobkonos and I live here? (Oh, right, jobs...). In addition to the places already mentioned, there's the Mid-Town area which has experienced something of a renaissance in recent years -- lots of cafes, bars, galleries, amidst older houses and funky buildings; an interesting variety of contemporary and older architecture; and some photographically interesting pockets of urban decay (R Street, the old rail yards). There are some outstanding brew pubs for the "Beer" part of the outing. And two charming guides... 🙂

When were you thinking of coming up?

BTW, there's an excellent Amtrak service between the Bay Area and Sacto, w/ a really easy transfer between the two systems at Richmond. The Amtrak Station in Sac is practically next door to Old Town and the Railway Museum. Much of the rest of downtown and Mid-Town is walkable.
 
The 21st may work for me, too.

In terms of upcoming events, Bob may know better than I as he lives closer to downtown. On the second saturday of every month, the art galleries in Mid-Town stay open late, there's music in the streets, the cafes are hoppin', and there's lots of good street photography action.

Looking further ahead, the Sacramento Jazz Festival is in May. I really enjoyed the photo ops there last year. Music was pretty good too.
 
Kevin, you are going. I'll help out a days-worth on a chapter (like I could help, that's a laugh). I'll pick you up.

Kent, when you get drunk enough, like you did the last beer and gear, a tripod can help.

man, that sounds great, a good long bike ride. With the way the weather has been, i haven't been able to ride enough lately, except for commuting (which is a little too white knuckle to be enjoyable).

Steve and I just had lunch and he told me of this venture. By coincidence I planned to be in Santa Clara that day but will cancel that plan to co-host. I think the Railroad museum and Towe auto museum, which are near the Crocker Art Museum (which is free on Sundays) are good venues-but bring fast film or push out that 400 film as the lighting stinks. Old Sac bores the heck out of me but whatever. R Street corridor is great, a must especially if it rains the night before and puddles are present. As for eats and beer, many places available, just depends how many show up for seating. I think the Fox & Goose, a Brit style pub/eatery is perfect for eats, beer,...and it is on R Street. At the other end of R Street a mere 6 blocks away is Burgers 'n Brew, so it is easy to do both with photography in between. 🙂

As for gear, we could make it a "Let's Get Screwed in Sac" day and make it a Barnack shooting day. But whatever we do, it will be gteat to have you here. This is only 10 days away so please think about ETA and where we might meet.

I called the museum to see what's up, and there is a tripod and trains day in April. For those inclined you can bring a monopod next Sunday. Railroad museum at 10 AM, and then food and drink?

Hey, the measuring cup on my bottle of cough syrup was off (is 8 ounces really too much???).

I like the "Let's get Screwed in Sacramento" suggestion, though Barnack lenses on Ms are going to have to do for me. Too painful to pull out the IIIG to look through that little finder 🙂

Railroad Museum at 10 am sounds good. There is a parking garage nearby although street parking on I Street is easy and free on Sundays, and a short walk into Old Sac and the RR Museum. The Fox & Goose for beer and food (try the rarebit omelet ) is 10 blocks east and 9 blocks south so best to drive there, then we are "stationed" for imbibing and shooting along R Street. I know a great French cafe for espresso and the best croissants ever (the dough is flown in from France) prior to your return trip. Or stay for terrific pizza and gelato at Hot Italian...

I plan to get all screwed up that day (IIIF RD and IIF RD with Canon lenses) and hope you will too.

I'm in, should be a fun day. So park by the museum and then move it later is the plan.

Hmmm... I might have to try to clean up the Barnack.
