Summicron 90 on M8

I admit that 90mm on M8 is not the focal length that I use the most, but still it is great for traveling - getting the odd shot that is best with a longish tele.

I have used the eminent and real tiny 90 2.8 so far, but today I got a summicron 90. Used to have one in the mid nineties, but was not happy because of vignetting on 2.0 and the bulk of it.

But the colours and sharpness was outstanding!

Anybody using one on their M8? Recommendations or problems? The focus seems to be fine from a quick test - but do these have back focus issues in general?

I use my APO Summicron 90mm very frequently on M8. For me, the x1.4 viewfinder magnifier is essential part of the combo. Later today, I will post some images if you are interested.

Just checked it indoors, seems like the focus is spot on. But I see the point of some magnification, it is really hard to be accurate enought...

I will not be using it for anything moving quickly at 2.0, for that I have a Sony a900 + 85 1.4, so I guess it will be workable even as is.

Summicron 90 on M8

Both with M8 and 90 summicron non ASPH, a jewel for me.
With magnif. 1.15 + corr. dioptr.

Great... I must admit that part of my reasoning was that I will eventually end up using it on an M9! That will be just a great combination...

The good thing about this one is that it has a rather big scratch, which made it a good buy - and also a good thing to own long term. I have been trying to get really worn Leicas for years, it is almost impossible... It feels better not having anything mint, but I do use it as a tool regardless - and my my M8 has developed quite some wear by now.

The build is marvelous I think - could not imagine one of these get damaged before the impact is enough to actually shatter the glass itself... I think that would actually take a hammer blow, or falling on granite from quite some height.

Tonight I used the A900/85 1.4 on a show - the autofocus is really necessary then - but what I really wanted to take along was the M8 and 90 2.0 of course 🙂

Hmm... Today I checked once more - and it seems to be 10-15 cm off at close range, approx 2 meters...

I opened the back and cleaned out some dust and excess oil - but there are no means of adjusting as far as I can see. Anybody know if I need to have something like a grinding of the cam to get this aligned?

Just realised, and tested with a small bit of tape, that the part of the cam that regulates close focus will need to be raised. And very slightly that is, so its not the easiest task...

No, don't fiddle with the cam!! Have a technician adjust it by correcting the shimming inside the lens!

I have an APO summicron 90, while I don't use it a lot, it is great on the M8 especially with some magnification on the viewfinder. I recently took some shots of a local red shouldered hawk and even though I got close I had to crop the photos. The crops were amazing, I could count the feathers!!😀
