hey all,
i have recently noticed that nothing happens when i switch on my m7. i turn it to the on position but it doesnt start up and doesnt meter. it also wont let me take a picture. so i got some new batteries and it worked fine for a bit but it recently is intermittently not working.
the only way i can get it to work is by giving the camera base a light tap on my palm.
is there something wrong with my electronics?

Sounds more like a dodgy battery contact.

Shoot.
Agree with Mike.

Contacts can be cleaned with the little eraser (rubber) at the bum end of a pencil. Then check spring tension. If it's a soldered wire coming unstuck, it means a bigger job.

If its the battery holder or cap then you might get away with gently tweeking the metal contact’s out a bit so that you have to apply more pressure to screw on the battery cap.
If it’s not there then it’s more likely to be a loose soldered joint in the body off the camera and you’d need somebody who know’s what they are doing to strip the camera down.

... likes film again.
Could also well be the ON / OFF switch of the M7.

Make sure you use 2 3V cells, and not 4 1,5V cells, as this can exacerbate the false contact problem.

i am using 2 3v cells. CR1/3N batteries.
I tried to use a tweezer to adjust the metal contacts in the battery compartment and it seems to work a little better now but still doesn't turn on sometimes
.
i guess its time to contact leica.
i had the MP finder upgraded about 4 months ago. anyone know if they could/would fix it for free?

I wouldn't be surprised. I bet there's a 6 month warranty after service, hope so anyway.

Before you contact Leica, do what Paysam suggested. Clean the contacts with an eraser. Also, make sure you get rid of any little eraser bits that come off during the cleaning.

Just got back from Cuba where the M7 performed flawlessly for thirty rolls of TMY and Neopan. Once back home I loaded a fresh roll of film for a bit of street shooting and I could not get the camera to fire. Meter was working, batteries still fresh, and mechanical speeds (125/60) would work. But in Auto, pressing the release would not trip the shutter. Bought the M7 new and it is only 15 months old with ~ 200 rolls put through it. Needless to say, I'm less than impressed. Oddly, my pair of M8's have functioned perfectly for the last 2.5 years, and knock on wood, the M9 has been solid after 5200 exposures.
