canon scanner 8800F

I have a 8600F which is great for MF. It really struggles with 35mm however.
The software that comes with it is terrible for colour shifts when scanning. ie the preview will look acceptable, but the resulting scan will be MUCH darker or have very blue casts etc. This occurs on Winxp, CS2, scanning using the canoscan software and using the silverfast software, so I suspect it may be something to do with the photoshop / driver interface. Strangly, sometimes the colours come out fine (as per the preview).

I had nice results with 120 film with this scanner, but 35mm (b&w) is a disaster with the Canon software.

After reading the above mentioned review of the scanner I decided to try VueScan, and a miracle happend, my 35mm film doesn't look like it was taken with a camera with a broken shutter and light meter ;-)

In short, try VueScan it will probably fix your problems at least for b&w film

Hmm!

Hmm!

I've myself a 8800 and I want to change it so badly. I did buy that scanner few years ago not knowing anything on the filmscan subject.

It gives a kind of DCT compression around hard edge that is really hard to remove, even using the software include or Vuescan at an intense quality with DNG or TIFF (no compression). I tend to get better result with black and white, but still... Not sharp, DCT compression = not satisfied.

Maybe I am too demanding now.

But for the web, this is more than ok.

Edit : DCT Compression = Kind of blocky look on complicated visual. For example, JPEG uses this kind of compression, as the PSD and also the Mini-DV (yes, the little messy tapes)

I use this scanner on Mac OS X, with the bundled MP Navigator software. I scan 6X7 and 35mm, XPAN panoramic directly and do not manipulate them at all using whatever software. I tried Vuescan, CS etc, but they are too much hassle.
It's already time consuming to scan, why bother doing those digital invert, saturation, contract etc etc.
Here are a few straight out from the bundled software without any manipulation

I use it and love it, with MacBook Pro OS X.

Here's a shot from my Fuji GW690II with Rollei Ortho 25 ISO film:

One from my Leica M3 with Rollei Pan 25 ISO film -- enlarging this scan to 100% I could read the license plate on the car:

It does great on my 6x9 scans with B&W and c-41. However it seems to lack the dynamic range for E-6 slides. I have not been happy with it for 35mm.

When I got it Vuescan for 64 bit OSs would not work with it, so I got silverfast. I mostly get my images scanned at NCPS.

I know this is not B&W but it shows the potential for 6x9 scans. The following GW690/Pro 800z image I scanned at 2400 dpi with 48 bit depth. The resulting scan was to big for ACDSee Pro but works just fine with 64-bit lightroom or darktable on my linux box.

Click on the image above for the as-scanned 48bit TIFF. However be warned it is a 247 Megabyte file and will take a very long time to download unless you have a very fast connection.

Pirate, are these samples from the 5600F or the 8800F?

Sorry, those are from the 8800F, it's the only scanner I have.

I think the biggest thing to using it is to use the ScanGear (if you don't have external software) and you have to click on the box for "Use the scanner driver", then use the "Advanced Settings". This lets you select the resolution you want to use, not the 300 dpi it presets for basic nonsense stuff.

Also, at one point I had this loaded on a Vista maching while running Photoshop CS4. From inside Photoshop I could Import with this driver. It was the best set-up ever. Windows conveniently messed up my system with one of their updates and I've not been able to do that setup again. I now run Photoshop CS5 and the 8800F with ScanGear on a MacBook Pro with OS X. I can't run the ScanGear through Photoshop like this, but I can set the ScanGear to open the scanned items in Photoshop when the scan is complete, so it's not all bad.

Pirate, you need to install a TWAIN driver for the Canon 8800f. You can find the driver from Canon support website somewhere. The TWAIN driver allows you to operate Canon scanner from within your Photoshop interface (Import command).

I did go to the Canon site just yesterday and installed the driver. Still won't work. Can you point out a specific driver, maybe I'm getting the wrong one?

And remember, this is for a Mac, no more Windows.

Or maybe I'm just missing how to open it inside Photoshop?
