in the summer of last year i had the great pleasure of meeting a rff member who let me peer through the finder of his om-1. i had always appreciated the form and function of the om series but admittedly hadn't spent much time behind the finder. well boy oh boy was i surprised.
shortly after our meeting, and much to my delight, said rff member paid me a visit with an om- 1 in hand and handed it over. i am not sure what pleased me more, the camera or the thought that someone went so far out of their way to be so gracious to me. to make the story even sweeter another rff member got word that i had a new (to me) om-1 on hand and emailed me to inform me he was sending a lens my way to join the om-1 and lens i had been given. i admit it was a humbling experience.
so, fast forward. my 10 year old boy has been eyeing it up as of late. i saw him fiddling with it a few weeks back and thought it was a message of sorts. i asked him if he would like to learn how to use it. top to bottom. handheld meter, develop the film himself, scan it and do the corrections in cs. well i think he almost exploded with excitement!
last weekend he shot his first roll of tri-x. sekonic in hand. afterwards he sat on the couch for two hours practicing loading reels while watching the clone wars. a change bag, some tri-x, d-76 1+1 and a few hours later... voila!

i was absolutely shocked at his success with using a meter to figure it all out in very dicey conditions! he hasn't quite inherited dad's affection for the 24-28mm range and being so close but has determined he will give it a solid try before he decides he needs something else. bravo!
so here we are. the om-1 was briefly in my hands however it seems now to have found it's way into very eager hands. i know both of the members will be as thrilled as my son!
PS happy birthday Earl!
