16 Cents per MF image... It's killing me....

Just got back my Send Out only from Walmart for this week and really think I may have to consider a darkroom or give up Medium Format.

Can anyone tell me if I can cut my cost per neg/print for C-41 color below 16 cents per image by doing my own processing, scanning and printing???

I picked up my C-41 6X9 images (8 per roll) and got the sleeved negs and prints for $1.32. No postage or shipping of course since Walmart takes care of that in their "Send Out Only" process. I fill out the envelope, drop it in a slot, takes about ten days and they call me when it arrive... Out 3-21, back 3-31.

If you don't need the prints just request the negs-only and it'll be less than 12 cents a shot. Or shoot a roll of 220 and get it developed (again, no prints) for the same price as 120 C41, so 6 cents a shot.

I paid 50 dollars Australian for my first roll of 120 film. I've done it myself ever since.

Unfortunately, the folks there don't get told a thing about film send out processing.

I think this is not expensive at all. This is MF. I don't even think that I get development/prints for 35mm film at that price here.

$1.32 for a whole roll! I'd be in heaven if I paid that little. I reckon each single 6x6 frame in MF costs me about $1.50 in total (film and processing).

Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Development only for C-41 (35mm or MF, doesn't matter) is about $7 here. With prints, it's probably more than twice that. I don't really know, I take development only.

I normally pay 3€ dev only. But that's at a local photographer's, so it's conveniently quick. He's a professional (mostly weddings and portraits) who still shoots film.

This is a joke, right? Must be. For 16c per image I'd sell all my darkroom equimpment and start shopping in Walmart. In Holland one roll of color film through the same process would cost you roughly $60. But then again, we're all insanely rich here, so that's just peanuts.

I've passed a number of rolls through Walmart. I've now stopped, but not because they are expensive, but they seem to have random pricing. Fuji sends their 120/220 to Dwayne's Photo. This three step process with the total ignorance of the Walmart staff had me call Fuji and get pricing for each service at my Walmart. I get my items back and occasionally they were priced per Fuji and many times not and there was not a set price list to be found in the store. They just tell you to call Fuji and they don't really give you anything useable. I finally almost came to blows with the store manager and decided to just pay more for the luxury of knowing what the charges are ahead of time. I now happily mail film off to a Northern California lab that has had good reviews. I love Walmart in general and I hate to complain at a time that few outlets will process your film, but their film setup is rather unprofessional for such a well organized outfit.

No joke. Fuji is giving away medium format processing through Wal-Mart. It's very nice while it lasts. I'm afraid they will eventually figure out a "code" for that, though.
