Does anyone use generic ebay 40.5mm thread hoods with their 50mm hexanon? Vignetting? for example this one: link. Those auctions do not mention what is the widest focal length to be used with those hoods.

I hate that built in hood...

I too do not like the "hood" of the M-Hex 50/2: it looks too small to be of much use. On the other hand, the lens is widely held to be virtually immune to flare.

I am wondering why you would not use the built in hood? It is effective and convenient....

Never had any flare problem with the Hexanon either....

I used a similar one from Heavystar w/ my 50 M-Hex, but after a while gave up because the built in hood is more ergonomic for my style of handling & storing lenses and it protrudes a lot less when shooting.

I don't remember the vented hood causing any vignetting/light falloff, though.

I have a bunch of generic (heavystar, etc.) & vintage (Walz, etc.) vented 40.5mm hoods. They're good for almost all 40-50mm lenses w/no vignetting. If it's vented, it was originally made for standard/normal lenses.

I don't like the Hexanon's built-in hood, either, not because the lens is vulnerable to flare but because it doesn't lock in place like that on the Leica 50/1.4 Summilux ASPH & offers no physical protection (which is a major part of a lens hood's job, IMHO).

I have a hood that looks like that. It fits and causes no vignetting, but still I don't use it because -- although vented -- it blocks a corner of the viewfinder (on my Bessa R3a).

Those are the reasons why I don't like that built in hood. It just annoys the sh*t out of me that the hood does not stay in it's position... I almost super glued it... :D I will try one of those ebay hoods.

Here's the hood I got from Heavystar a few years back (the Hexar on the right):

Hexar RF on left w/28mm f/2.8 M-Hexanon & standard hood; Hex on right w/50mm f/2 M-Hex & Heavystar screw-on hood.

Like a few people here, my issue with the built-in hood has nothing to do with flare-protection (it's fine on that count), but with physical protection: since it doesn't lock into position when extended, it leaves the lens vulnerable to getting smacked in the front element. And, since I've never been fond of using filters, I went for a a rigid, screw-on metal hood. This one presents minimal finder blockage, IMO.

Some folks on RFF came up with a method of keeping the built-in hood in place. I think it involved a piece of bicycle inner tube.
