I recently bought a 1949 50mm Summitar (and an M2!) and just processed the first roll of Ektar 100 - I'm amazed by the quality of the images and here are a few - the one of the girl and her dad was straight into strong sunlight and shows very little flare! The two with the wilder bokeh were shot at about f4, the others around f8 or f11.

I have to say... I am impressed too ! That lens can be tricky (from experience) but the colors in your shots really "pop". Very nice series !

Cheers,

Gabor

Indeed, really sweet color rendition for a 1949 lens. I'd expect it to flare much more. There's something liberating about using an older lens with a modern film -- like you're somehow stepping through time.

click on "all sizes" at the image on flickr, then copy the shorter link in the window at the bottom of the page, then, on RFF, click on the "insert image" icon(the one with the sunny landscape) and paste the link.

P.S. nice photos

My Summitar is from 1949. Never had any real flare problems with it and enjoyed what it did while I was using it.

Thanks for this thread on the Summitar Mike. I really like the colors expressed in your shots with the Ektar, which seems to be a good match with this lens. I especially like the foto of the gent in the foreground and the 2 gents in the background, b/c we get to see what the OOF starts to do.
I just got my hands on an uncoated 1940 Summitar: too eager to wait for film results, so I put it on my RD-1s at first. My lens is probably even lower contrast than your 1949 version, presuming the post-war version has some kind of coating on it.
Here are a couple I took yesterday on the RD1s:

I actually like the less saturated colors in the colored thumbnail below:

this works with my office pc but not from home!
when doin' at home I only insert the link, but no picture - where's the problem?

Nice examples too - and, yes mine is coated - whether it is an original coating or it has been done or redone at some stage I don't know!

As I only paid £99 for mine (from a dealer with a guarantee!), I can't be more pleased with my purchase!!

Just got my Summitar yesterday. Based on the serial it s made in 1952. The swirly bokeh is quite dizzying. :) I like the pics you have taken. Very nice.
