Hoping to find a sliver lining to being stranded in Hong Kong by the volcanic ash cloud.

Where are the best places to go for new and used Leica in HK?

Many thanks for any suggestions,

Simon

(Hoping to get back to the UK one day.)

There doesn't seem to be the deals in HK that there used to be. Hop over the bay to the other side.

7 days a week you can shop.
Here's a couple of authorized Leica dealers on the Kowloon side.
Don't expect savings other than VAT that you'd have to pay in the UK etc.
There are M9s around however, they're marked up by more than 10% over list. Laws of Demand & Supply I guess.

Tin Cheung Camera Company
6B Carnavon Rd., Shop 5, 1/F. Friends' House
Tsimshatsui, Kowloon

New Francisco Photo Co.
62 Mody Road
Shop No. G50-51, Wing On Plaza Tsimshatsui, Kowloon

For some used equipment that you can bargain for at "reasonble prices" (but not cheap) go to "Champagne Court" in Tsim Sha Tsui. (Champagne Court is a rather generous name for what is a fairly old collection of stores)

Its on Kimberley Road opposite the Miramar Tower. If you're taking the MTR/KCR, then its the TST station and take the Kowloon Mosque exit which should put you on Nathan Road.

Champagne Court has a collection of 2nd hand camera stores (and perahps some 2nd hand watch stores, if my memory is correct) and is located in from the corner of Nathan Road & Kimberley.

You'll find 6 or more 2nd hand camera stores selling all sorts of goodies. Do bargain a bit and you'll come out fine!

Enjoy!

try the other Tin Cheung store at Mody Rd. They have new and used Leicas and Voigtlanders, and other nice stuff

Shop 31, G/F Mirador Mansion, 1E Mody Road
Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon
Hong Kong
+852 2722 1286

On HK island you can try L&H for new/used Leica and Hassy gear
SHOP NOS 35-36 & 50-51, 11/F, WINDSOR HOUSE,
311 GLOUCESTER ROAD, CAUSEWAY BAY, HONG KONG.
Tel: 00852-3907 0282
(sorry for the BOLD...cut and paste)

Neither will yield you bargains, but I suspect cheaper than UK or Europe. And not likely to get a brick.

To LabasArabas: I'm looking for a good ZI/ZM deal, but I couldn't seem to locate a shop that has any. I've asked Tin Cheung about a getting a new body, and am still waiting after 2 months

Thanks Binky, I appreciate your reply.

Check out Tin Cheung 2nd floor, not very cheap but price is very reasonable with regard to condition

Unfortunately they no longer have any s/hand gear up there. It's all bags now.

However still take a look at Tin Chueng, all the dealers at Champagne Court (btw All Best Camera will be rather blank and seemingly unresponsive, but if he knows you're serious he's actually a nice knowledgeable guy). Shogun is also not far http://www.shoguncamera.com/ and again New Francisco is also walking distance. Note Champagne ct is not open today (Sunday).

Many thanks for these replies. I have just been moved by Cathay Pacific from an airport hotel into one in Kowloon, so I'll go out and take a look.

All the best,

Simon

Suppose you might not make it to Central if you're in Kowloon, but I think it's along Stanley street that there're a few shops with old cameras and plenty of film.

If you go by MTR, you take it to Central and get out exit D (Pedder street). I think it's D2…whichever one requires you to walk more stairs will be the one.

Get out, across the street (walk towards H&M & Watsons), up 2 flights of stone steps and turn right. Small-ish store. Across the street are 2 stores that sell film that I know of, so you won't run out.

There's well respected (consumer safe/friendly) photoshop in Yau Ma Tei called Kowloon Life Camera (Kowloon Life Photo Service) that's an authorize Leica dealer. It's in the middle between Jordan and Yau Ma Tei station. They have decent prices and are more competitive then Man Shing and Wing Shing in Mong Kok which is also very reliable (aka. they won't scam you).

I've always bought my stuff from Kowloon Life when I visit Hong Kong. Here's the address: G/F, 5, Woosung Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, Hong Kong

I bought my MP and 3 lenses from Kinefoto at G/F., Shop 1 66-68 Stanley Street Central, for a reasonable price, and I've also bought from Tin Cheung on Mody Rd before and found them reasonable. It's always a good idea to know the UK price, less VAT before you buy to weigh-up if you're getting a good deal. It's worth noting that you may find yourself paying VAT when you do make it back to the UK though...

I've always avoided HK duty free like the plague. Customers in the airport are a captive audience, and HK is a duty free port in any case.
