Hello folks,

Can anyone suggest what's gone wrong below? This is the first film that I have run through this camera, and this problem seems intermittent.
Best regards,
RoyM

There was a delay in receiving this camera when I bought it, as the seller replaced the seals. I have compared it to this page (http://www.ukcamera.com/collect/ricoh_reseal.html) and notice that the seals are replaced on the flat surface of the door only, and not the return surface at the hinge end. I'll try this - thanks for your suggestions.
Shame really - I'm not planning to keep this camera, as I'm happy enough with my Olympus 35RC. I was only running a film through to check it before placing it on ebay!
Best regards,
RoyM

35RC really feels better. I'm not saying about lens....my 500G had weak springy sound after releasing shutter and I gave it to guy who wanted small rangefinder camera even before replacing light seals.

Replacing the light seals on the Ricoh is a real pain. I have completely removed them from mine and i put electrical tape to make it light-proof. I was so pleasantly surprised with the rikenon, certainly much better than the Yashica's T4 Tessar.

I've put a strip of 1.5mm (from Insterslice) at the hinge end of the door. Now running a cheapy Fuji film through to test.
Best regards,

Have you fixed foam seals on other cameras? IMO the Ricoh 500G is actually one of the easier ones. Scrape out the old goo (no need to go over the top and breathe lighter fluid for an afternoon, as in the link above), cut a piece of black felt to size with the necessary openings, glue in. Done. No grooves to clean out and pack with "just enough but not too much" string, and such fun jobs.

Worked great on mine, but then after a few months the rewind lock wouldn't disengage properly anymore.

No i don't have that much experience in putting new light-seals but i've read a couple of posts in blogs saying how difficult they've found it to re-seal them.
I am thinking to order a set from interslice and re-seal it because the tape causes the paint to chip.

interslice kits are pretty good. I've used several and found them easy as long as you take your time. However its the preparation that I find a bit of a chore - it can take me a couple of hours to get out all the old gunge - perhaps I am too finickity in insisting in getting it all out. I find old dental probes quite useful!
Jon Goodman is very helpful with his kits amd has a lot of downloadable instructions. So have a go - good light and a magnifying glass are part of my stock in trade to do any resealing.

That's better!
