21mm Biogon Aftermarket Hood?

Yup. I saw that one. I e-mailed heavystar about whether it would work with the 21 -- he replied promptly, but he wasn't sure. 21 is pretty wide. At $9.00 it is worth the risk . . so unless someone has a better idea, I'll probably purchase it and see.

Thanks for the ping back.l

Ben

I'm not sure what makes that Heavystar hood look stupid? It actually works well on my 28mm M-Hexanon, but I think it's as wide as I'd go with it. And there is NOTHING stupid about it. I use Original ZM hood on my Biogon 21/2.8, however it's not the one for 21mm but a round one for 25mm ZM Biogon. Still works fine. Many shots on film and not a sign of it being too narrow.

One nice thing about the ZM hoods (and many of the Leica hoods) is that they are either bayonet or some other kind of quick release system. I find threaded hoods annoying. They are a hassle when changing filters and when stowing the camera in the bag. It's nice to be able to just pop off the hood when you need to take it off.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try...

Dear Tim,

Exactly. This is why you have to pay what looks like silly money for them.

Cheers,

R.

A step-up ring and this might work fine- pricier, but I use the similar 46mm hood on my 28/2.0 ASPH and much prefer it to the Leica hood.

here is what mine from zm 25/28 looks like on 21/2.8:

Tim, you must have avoided Nikon's in your past. The world is littered with Nikon hoods! The stupid spring catch would always dump the hood at the slightest provocation. It would almost be worth it to mount an expedition and try to retrieve those lost ones, particularly Rf hoods (the $2-3000 21f4 hoods, the $700 25f4 hoods and the $300 35f1.8). I actually like thread mount hoods and the ZM bayonet hoods - haven't lost one of those yet!

Yeah, I only have one Nikon lens, a 50/1.4 from the 50's. It's hood had long been lost I'm sure by the time I got it two years ago.

For what it's worth, the ZM 21 hood might be one of the nicest designed hoods I've ever seen. Surely beats the big plastic Canon EOS ones. The Leica 50 pull out hoods are convenient but sometimes annoying. The Leica 28/2 hood... well it works. Easy on and easy off, but big. The CV 28/3.5 hood is nice and small, but if you want to change filters, off comes the hood.

The ZM 21 hood on the other hand... small, easy to take on and off, but at the same time, a real positive connection on the lens. It also doesn't look like your lens has a tumor either. Good job Zeiss.

I use the 25f2.8 ZM hood on both my 21f2.8 and the 21f4.5. So far no flare problem with either. The "big" hood for the 21f2.8 is effective and you can put the camera "face down" with it. Something I always do with cloth shuttered bodies anyway - burnt too many holes in shutters over the years.
My only problem with the big, flat 21f2.8 hood is if you keep the camera/lens in the bag and pull it out quickly. Anything else in the bag with a strap will have tangled up in it!

When I owned a ZM 21/4.5 I used a ZM 25/2.8 hood on it as well.

When I bought that hood at MAP Camera, I told the guy in the store I was going to use it on the ZM 21/4.5, and he replied it wasn't the right hood. I'd heard you could use it, so we checked the Zeiss catalog and sure enough it was listed for use on the 21mm Zeiss lenses.

The Zeiss hoods are expensive, but they're also the best available (like the Zeiss finders). Totally worth the money IMO. The Zeiss lens caps are another story all together!!

Funny, when I look on the German Zeiss homepage, it's not listed to be used on the 21s. Anyway, enough positive feedback on using the 25 hood on the 21 for me to have made my decision. Thanks, guys.

Now where's that "waiting for the mail" thread again? :D

Congrats. Its a nice hood.

I just checked the Cosina website here, and it clearly says the 21/25 square hood and 25/28 round hood can be used on the 21/4.5.

*別売の角型レンズシェード 21/25mm、丸型レンズシェード 25/28mm双方の使用が可能。

It doesn't say the same for the 21/2.8 here, but I think the Japanese language catalogue said it could be used.

Thanks for the link. I'm getting the 21/4.5 anyway. That's a nice web page, by the way. I can't read Japanese, but I do appreciate the graphics. These guys know how to induce GAS!
