Just got my Plustek 7600i SE scanner tonight from B&H.
It's wayyyy better than my epson 4490. Pictures are way sharper and overall just better quality. Scan times are quick, about 3-4x faster than the 4490. I'm using vuescan software. All pictures scanned at 3600dpi

I'm interested in this scanner for traveling kit (it comes also with one bag, right?). As far as I understand it's operated manually, how do you position the negative holder? is it possible to scan panoramic negatives as well (I suppose not, but maybe by filling the dividers in holder and stitching two pictures...)

I personally own a 7600i, too. It comes with a bag. The overall performance is very good for the price, but it is not fast.
The 6 picture holder will be inserted manually on the side. There are nobs which clinch it on every of the 6 steps, but you could use all the steps between them. The Scanner does not recognise what is between or which position. Its just plastic without intelligence.
One problem with X-Pan pictures could be the small plastic bridge which seperates the negatives, but you could remove one of them. It shouldn't endanger the overall stability very much. Then you could scan and move a bit forward and scan the next part.
I think all-in-all it is possible but friggling, because the holder ist not 100% fixed on the z-axis. So you must move it carfully to not rotate the panoramapicture too much between the 2-3 scans. Perhaps an external bracketing could stabilize it. If you don't scare some tinkering it would work very well.

Looks nice, actually. Could you maybe post a few 100% crops from some in-focus parts? That would be great ...

I had one 7200 then 7500i Studio before going for a Minolta 5400. The results can be okay, the colour not fantastic and the limited dynamic range will impose to use multi-exposure or multisampling, which makes the scanning longer. Downsides: I had to send each Plustek scanner back for fault (faulty CCD, faulty lens), therefore I suggest buying from new only and from serious dealers offering a good aftersales service. But when Plustek 7xxx scanner do work, they are good value for money.

I guess Plustek is also much lighter than Minolta.

The film used is Neopan Acros 100 in Rodinal 1-90 or 18 minutes.
I'm not sure how to post 100% crops, but if you go to my flickr link in my signature, you can then see the full resoultion size file. Also, I 95% of the time shoot black and white, and rarely shoot color. That's the main reason I went for the plustek over a coolscan (that and the large price difference..).
Sad to hear that they're kind of faulty. Mine came with a 1 year warranty so hopefully that's sufficient.

Also, does ICE work? Would you mind making a scan of a color negative for us to see?

I'm only sharpening after scanning in PP (Unsharp mask 100%, .7 radius).
I haven't tried the silverfast software, but i can try to scan a color neg with vuescan today

B&H has the 7600i SE on sale for $339 and I'm considering it, but the results have to be markedly better than I get with my Epson 4990.

Did you say the Plustek 7600i was markedly sharper than your Epson was? I'm struggling to get sharp images from my Epson 4990, and since I can't really afford a Coolscan 5000 right now, the 7600i looks good if it's focusing well and it's sharp. Your scans do look sharp, with good color.
Did you do any kind of color profiling, or is that Ektar scan what you ended up with by default? It looks great.

Scanning service from the lab was a little expensive so I thought about a scanner for some time now. This looks so promising that I ordered a plustek yesterday. I will not use it for mass scanning so the manual advance of the picture will be all right.
