Leica LTM Serial number question

Whenever I see a Leica serial number in print, or occasionally in a photo, some of the numerals are replaced with ******. Why is this?

Whenever I see a Leica serial number in print, or occasionally in a photo, some of the numerals are replaced with ******. Why is this? ...

It has become common practice to leave the last few numbers off when posting a serial numbered item on the internet. The practice started to prevent someone from claiming it is their 'stolen' item.

I do it myself even when I am the original owner - then I post a picture of the item with the serial number clearly visible.
