New Pana m4/3 fixed-lens with optical VF

You win some you lose some, an optical viewfinder for fixed lens. I haven't been interested in the recent m4/3's but I'm curious to see what will come from this.

Is this basically the LX4?

Smart move for Panasonic IMHO. They could lock down the premium fixed-lens compact segment with this, if the price is right. Software distortion correction will let them get the size of that lens down. I just hope it has a decent aperture and some form of IS.

After all the site is called 43rumors! It would be cool though. As small as an LX3 with an optical RF VF (XA, anyone?). :D

If this is true it'll be interesting. I personally think something like the G11 with a m43 sensor would sell extremely well because a lot of would-be point and shoot upgraders simply don't want to change lenses or carry extra ones. They just want higher quality photos in a smallish body, the smaller and more automatic the better.

Sounds nice - excited to see this! Just hope the lens is nice and bright & at least a 28 wide... An optical VF that's useable would be fantastic.

Finally. I've been waiting for this camera. I hope they maintain the relatively large aperture of the LX3 and they don't price it too silly.

FT5 usually pretty serious on this website. Would love to see an updated version of Digilux 2, but comments suggest just a a little bit bigger than LX3. so that is probably not the case. Cannot see how they will get a small package with a lens fast enough to create shallow dof, which is what I am hoping/waiting for.

It would seem to appeal to the P&S crowd that would be inclined to buy the G11, I agree. In fact, I was close to springing for the G11 when my brain kicked in and bought the EP2 for the larger sensor and lenses available. So this new niche might appeal to either side, I guess - the P&S crowd with a bit of extra cash to spend, or the almost-DSLR group who want to hold down costs but get decent quality shots. It a thing we used to call "neither fish nor fowl."

this would be too good to be true if it had a 35mm-e prime, but the zoom lens nudges it into possibility...

...I don't follow the site much, but it's good to hear that the site's a pretty good source...

I'm going to start saving again as of today :)

And what if the Leica version of the camera becomes the digital solution for Leica R users that was once hinted at ? Would not be compact obviously.

Dreaming on..

This would be an instant Sony NEX-* killer ! :)
Why would it be that? The NEX has interchangeable lenses. A Panny with a built-in zoom hasn't..

But then again, I just saw a Sony NEX in the real with a 16mm lens. It's much bigger than I thought. Especially compared to an LX-3, and that's with the 16mm lens, not with the bigger zoom. So, maybe you are right, maybe the Panny will kill the NEX, but it'll be because of the size.

maybe

maybe

But I think the NEX will take much better photos, even if larger. Check out the recent dxomark data, if you're into that. Shows it's performance very close to APS-C based dslrs, which are miles beyond 4/3 specs already.

I saw a similar comparison, and yes, I was impressed. The NEX shots had more detail than the Nikon dSLR it was up against..

Of course, the current crop of Nikons is extremely conservative in the sharpening that is used. You really have to crank it up to get the same results as I got with the previous generation..
