RockNRoll Hall of Fame Shoot/Gig.

My younger son plays the electric bass in a youth rock band. They have been invited by THE ROCKNROLL HALL OF FAME to come to Cleveland next weekend, and play two songs, at the festival that weekend. They will be on the main stage, which I believe is in the front lobby area. Showtime is 12:50 PM Sunday. Cameras are permitted in the lobby area, according to their website. The big question, is, should I take my Hasselblad (for the quality), or should I travel light, and carry a couple of Leicas?

My inclination is go 'blad. What are your thoughts?

Go with the Leica's. Faster lenses, that's what rock n roll is about. Worked for Jim Marshall.

Good point. I'm a big fan of Marshall's work, I have all of his books.
Probably more flexibilty (especially when I'm not sure about the location) with the Leicas.
Certainly less to carry around.

You'll be inside, you'll need the faster lenses as those sorts of places are usually pretty dark except for the spotlights. There will be plenty of movement too.

I'm going to take M2 with Al's favorite 19mm F3.5 Canon (the Super Angulon Killer), which has been to alot of rock concerts. And M5 with Canon 85mm F1.5. In the bag is a 50mm F1.2 Canon and a 35mm F2 Canon. And alot of Tri-X.

Speaking of things that worked for Jim Marshall, I have changed my mind about what film to take with me for this job. I have 100' of real Tri-X in the freezer, switching to that, rather than my usual XX. May need the speed, and the Tri-X is pushable, if need be. If it turns out to be a real bright location, I'll de-rate it to my normal EI 250. No color.

I've got gallon-mixes of Diafine and Acufine, this may be a good time to mix 'em up. Taking the Tri-X out of the freezer today, will load 18 rolls up Friday. Should be enough.

M4-2 is now heading back from Sherry Krauter. Wish I had it for this weekend. Three Leicas are better than two. 🙂

We're all packed and ready to head out. We will tour the Museum today, and enjoy ourselves. Tommorrow we'll be up early and be ready to go. My wife and her friend are handling the digital stuff, I'll shoot the Tri-X. Should be fun. The kids are nervous and excited, as you would expect. This is huge.

We're Back. They played three songs instead of two, got an extra five minutes. Everybody had a fantastic time, the kids sounded great, played hard and really enjoyed themselves. The Rock Musuem gave our party twenty tickets for admission ($22 apiece!) still did not have enough to go around. Oh Well.

Shot three 36 exposure rolls of Tri-X in fifteen minutes in M2 and M5. Used the 19mm and the 35mm. Will add this to the front of the processing line, so I will see it first. And will try to get something up here soon.

Everybody had fun.

Pretty awful photographic conditions, more Tri-X. Everybody had fun. All shot with the 19mm F3.5 Canon on M2:

Bet that was fun. My view is that the 19mm is leaving you too detached from the action. You would need to be three feet away to get close enough and they aint going to want dad up on stage with them 🙂

Maybe next time you might want to try taking a 90 or 135 lens?
There seems to be plenty of light.
Enough to keep things light and to even have used an F4 tele elmar or elmar-c ?

That's a good point, I like to use the 19mm for those "here is how it feels to be up there" type of photos. I move in as close as I can physically, and yes, I do get on the stage from all angles. As Jim Marshall said, "ALL ACCESS". I use the 35mm quite a bit to isolate the groupings as they thrash around, sometimes a 50. Actually for the individual shots, I prefer my Hasselblads with the 350mm. Been using that alot, along with the 40mm. Now I have the fisheye.

I find individuals pretty easy to get, it's all of them at once that is tough, especially to see our drummer (would you believe he is only twelve years old?). I have an original LED ZEPELLIN concert Marshall print and you could see even he had the same issues. Groups are the toughest, no question. Especially to see the drummer.

Oh yeah, use the Leicas... the hasselblad will just become awkward in this situation I would imagine.
