I've been curious to try a staining developer, and finally decided on Finol. After awhile of having it sit around, I just recently developed a couple of rolls of film in it. I haven't printed anything from the negatives, yet, so my initial observations are based upon eyeballing the negatives and viewing the scans.

I processed a roll of Neopan 400 and a roll of Ilford Delta 400. I followed the instructions for each pretty much to the letter. Both developing times were longer than my old stand-by Rodinal, and you have to agitate fairly often ( a lot on the Delta 400 ). Both rolls did come out fairly nice, however, and with hardly any stain ( which I've read is proper ). I'll be curious to see how they look once printed.

I'll let the prints decide whether or not I'll use Finol more extensively, though, as I still prefer Rodinal ( I'm a fan, what can I say... ).

Also, if anyone else has any experience with Finol, I'd like to hear it.

The first pic is the Neopan; the second, the Delta 400.

Jan, that's very nice control of highlights. So, is the staining more or less compared to Pyrocat-HD?

What is the developer based on, Pyrocatechol ?

Rodinal is like a constant companion. But, you are allowed to experiment with others. ;)

I'm fairly certain that it's based on pyrocatechol. I can't compare the staining, since this is the first staining developer that I've used, but I would bet that it's less than Pyro-HD, as there's very little noticeable stain on the negatives. And I do think that the developer handled the contrast in all of the shots pretty well.
