Hi ya'll

There was a thread about an artisan in China who was using wood from old furniture in China to shape into a wooden handgrip for M3.

Wood (sorry for the pun) anyone know where to contact this artisan? The idea of using a 200 year wood for my M3 sounds very very eco yet unique.

Dear Ferider,

Thanks for the HU but that's not it. The artisan is non-commercial and uses old wood. Also the grip is very organic looking.

I guess what appeals to me is the recycling and the uniqueness of old wood. If I had my choice it would only be oiled and no varnish.

Anyone with the similar taste?

Try to imagine this, wood that has survived 200 years of use. The patina, grain and etc.

Just wan to track down an artisan who will do this.

My requirements are simple:

The wood must be more than 200 years old

Of course hard wood can only be used

Nice wood grain would be great but optional

The grip must be organic (no sharp corners) and may be ergonomic but must not be the current ergonomic styles. The grip must be functional but yet the design must be timeless

Finally the screws and metal hardware must be brass/bronze

Whadaya think?

Totally agree Martin but each craftsman should have a tool that he/she should be proud to use.

I like wood and feel that wood is a living material and it better with time.

I wonder if there is a wooden rangefinder in mount?
 
I think Brazilian Rosewood would be nice, but not ebony as I recall it tends to split over time. Maybe find a grip design you like out of metal, then have a guy in your area who make custom knives/ handles out of wood fabricate it for you.

There are a lot of those guys around nowadays and they are usually good at making finger grooves too if you want that.

The whole deal may cost you a few bucks though.

Sounds like a good start. Any good suggestions? It needs to be functional and have no sharp edges. Organic shapes would be my favorite

My dad does a lot of this kind of wood working. I'll have to get my M3 to him, and my Nikon SLR and maybe he can make a Nikon-ish grip for the M3.....

I would like to use recycled wood if possible from old furniture or doors. The older the better. Also I am looking for oiled wood no varnish. Also would like to use brass as the metal hardware.

Anyone interested in this project?

I am looking on the web for a good design
 
got the message. I'm interested. I only have three months and I'll be moving so I may not be able to do much for now, but I'll do what I can.
