I had a day off today so figured I would take the opportunity to take a couple of cameras out and play around.
- OK how about the Nikon F100 with a 24mm lens and wide angle zoom.
- Extra set of batteries since the ones in the camera were acting a little funny.
Hmm - Medium Format camera - Rollei 6008I which I haven't used in a while.
Charged battery, film in bag, one just loaded in camera.
Find a predetermined place to shoot - underpass by the local river.
So I get out and walked to the spot i remember from a few years ago - so much vegetation had grown, I couldn't see a thing.
Note to self. Scout your location carefully.
Walk to another spot, raise the camera to check the scene - crap ... condensation -
Note to self. OK don't drive to the spot with the AC down to 60 when it's so warm and humid outside.
The fog finally clears and I use the use the Rollei on a shot. The motor makes a strange noise while advancing the film one frame. Another shot, another strange long motor winding noise. I look at the frame counter and it reads ... end. CRAP!
Loaded the film wrong...idiot, check if the film is loaded correctly while you're in the cool of the house or car, especially if you had not used the camera in a year.
OK I finally get the film oriented right after a few attempts, I'm sweaty, PO'd, tired, film's probably fogged but I shoot the roll and don't load another. It's just too hot!
OK, It's time for the Nikon. I'm shooting, and shooting and notice that the camera has been in manual mode ...CRAP CRAP!! The only thing I've been changing is the aperture for "artistic" dof issues.
Note to self - don't use manual to play around trying to guess exposures, the meter is much better than you. Plus you always forget to set it back.
OK I go back and reshoot, and now the camera becomes unresponsive ... CRAP!!!!! So I'm trying to retrieve the batteries which were just dumped into bag, hold the battery holder, try not to drop the F100, all while the Rollei and bag become entangled around my neck.
Note to self - Change the batteries at home, where it's cool, and you're not afraid to set the camera down, ESPECIALLY when you know they are dying.
I quickly shoot another roll and drive home.
I can't wait and try to load the 120 film on the reel tonight.
Did I mention that I just just turned one year older today?

On my last outing, the one thing I didn't bring was bug spray. I was at a nature preserve and every time I stopped, a squadron of our vicious Minnesota mosquitos swarmed in. The only camera I had with me was my Speed Graphic. I decided that I probably wouldn't survive setting up and taking a shot, so I just kept moving and enjoyed the walk.

I think the multitude of screw ups could stem from being a little tired (came off a 24 hr shift), and maybe God's punishment for the negative thought I had about the clerk at McDonald's early this morning.
And to think I have been proudly using the one body, one lens per outing system with great results for a few months now. Oh well.

I feel your pain. I went out for a photo walk last Saturday. What to take? Well, a Recomar I have been wanting to try, the Kiev, a tripod, of course the XA since I want to expose some slide film. Yeah, need one or two light meters (why? why not?) Two folders; a 6x6 and a 6x9, oh year, the Weltini too. Oh, my digital P&S. Saturday was one of our 95-100 degree humid days.
Before we got started, the tripod went into the trunk, the Kiev went back in the trunk, one light meter is enough, the XA fits on my belt, the Recomar in a bag (it's heavier than I thought), only need one MF folder, and the little Weltini. That was still a lot on such a hot humid day. Looking at all those DSLRs with the big zoom lenses, I was almost jealous.
Trouble keeping the cameras set for all the differing light. Not used to it any more. Why does that reading seem off? Oh, low and high reading marks. Yeah those exposures will look good. ????
