Sold M2 - no agreed price!

An odd request here:

Some of you will remember Cam, though she hasn't appeared much on the forum lately (not least because she was busy moving house).

I lent her one of my M2s (keeping the one with the RapidWinder on it!) on the understanding that if she wanted to keep it, she could buy it off me.

Well, she wants to keep it, but I don't know what to charge: we never discussed price. NOT top whack, obviously, because she's a friend and a fellow RFF member, but equally, I don't want to give it away. She's had it for quite a while and is happy with it (no hidden or unknown problems), so what's a fair price?

I'm with Helen on this one - most M2's I think are in and around the $650-$700 price range (depending on condition of course) .

In the UK £350-500 depending on condition and version, to a friend? then it depends what value the friendship has

Based on the circumstances and on the condition described, I'd actually propose $500. That is below current market value but not unreasonably so. Here at RFF (and even moreso at NFF) I've gotten a number of similar deals from friends so I would not hesitate to give such a deal personally. And isn't it continuing to be used a better thing than it sitting on a shelf collecting dust?

For a friend I would ask for a nice meal or 2 or 3 signed prints.

650 $ - considering the exchange rate - would be a little much here in Germany, even from a dealer. I'd sell it (and in fact have sold one) for closer to 500 dollars.

After 30+ years, and maybe a repair or two, I'm not sure what it stands me in. Besides, charging the prices of 30-40 years ago doesn't make that much sense!

Cam is a friend, but equally, not someone with whom I am in touch every day, or even every month: months can go by without our communicating. In fact we've only ever met once, in Arles in 2009. William's assessment is nearest the mark.

To everyone else: there seems to be remarkable unanimity on the dollar price, for which thank you very much, and thanks to Stewart for a £ sterling price. Any further ideas on a euro price? I'm in France; she's in Belgium.

I'm with William. Although, Roger, if you had seen the post above about a market value of US $650, you might have reached the same conclusion.

Agreed. If it's a close friend, I wouldn't hesitate to give her a lower price (lower than the common price). In a way, it'll tell her that she means something to you. 😀

I'd say charge less than what would make you feel guilty and more than what would make you regret it.
You'd have to be the judge.
Vague, I know, but you have already had specific suggestions.

i am a terrible friend, an awful friend, and have gone underground whilst moving (leaving Paris made me blue and seemed to go on forever...). i have been horrific with both my friendships and sharing my photographs or looking other's work for which i deserve at least ninety lashes with a wet noodle!

whereas Roger has been forever giving, both in loaning me the camera (always a try-before-you-buy affair) and in endless and priceless advice through my adventures in falling in love with rangefinder photography.

thank you all for helping with the price -- it was always my intention to pay. as i said above, Roger (and Frances!) have already given me so much!

i only hope to do the camera proud as my metering skills still well and truly suck...
