just looked over at ebay, completed listings and prices range from 600 to over 1000 usd...

is this accurate or at least within your experience as well?

Is it six-bit coded?
Those lenses really do seem to be all over the place in terms of price. I've seen nice ones go in the $550-$600 range.

in a perfect world (that would be one where $$ was no object) i would not even be thinking about it.
the elmar really is a special lens and my plan was to use it solo as a walkabout lens. perfect plan except that i rarely have that sort of walkabout time.

also, i am thinking about starting an m8 fund and the elmar might be the first sacrifice toward that goal.

not coded tim.
i wonder if there has been a recent increase in the elmar price as there seems to be with other leica lenses?

Gotta get a hold of that Churn, man.

Before you start up again, do this. Get a white sheet of paper lit by daylight or flash. Shoot the paper with no lens on, this is your control. Take a pic of the paper with each of your lenses, matching the histogrammic exposure. In your raw convertor select all, and use the wb dropper to balance on your 'control. Be sure to convert the files, not just look at them in the convertor. You may have to put a piece of gaf tape with a hole in it for a smaller aperture on your no lens control shot.

Compare their color.

That could very well be. I've had a couple of those elmars during my buying/selling days. I'm not sure why, but it just seems to be an underappreciated lens. I'd guess that some M8 users are afraid of it because they worry about collapsing it into the camera body (something I did without any trouble.)

mine collapses nicely into the rd1 as well.

Here in the UK dealers have them listed at around the US$700-800 mark, which seems to be the best value out there for a later Leica lens.

Perhaps it needs a dedicated picture thread to push the price up? :)

Yeah, sold mine end of last year north of 600, Joe. Black ones will get you a bit more.

Yes, black ones w/o 6bit coding in great condition go for 650 to 750 USD.

As Paul said on the bay, all over the place.

A good deal for a great lens, but still a bit more on the top end of the selling range discernible here in N.A..

not sure about pricing, ebay can look more promising but many of the buyers there have limited experience and just see the leica name etc.

You can also do it this way, and check the rgb's in photoshop but it's not as good.

I bought the most recent Elmar-M, six-bit coded, off eBay, in new condition still in the box, warranty card, etc., with a late serial number (by my estimate, towards the final batch). Cost $750. Probably one of the better deals I've gotten.

Mine is like the the 1.4 `Lux, just missing the 1.4.2.0, marks and around 1/4 the weight.
Great lens. My Summicrons are retired.
