i seemed to have caused a small eruption of emotion with the announcement of my having started an m8 fund.

i will not be getting rid of my rd1 cameras...in fact, one is on it's way to japan for an overhaul and when it returns, the other will face the same fate.

think of my having an rd1 and an m8 as anyone else having an m2 and m3 or a zeiss ikon and a hexar rf...you get it?

even if the m8 files are better/different...the rd1 is a special camera that produces images that i love.

there is room for both...

I'm going to step out on a limb here and say that once you get acquainted with the M8s, you'll lose interest in the rd1.
I'll give it 4 months before they go out on the block as you contemplate adding a second M8.

I could be wrong, but that's my prediction...
(so you might want to hold off on that second overhaul;))

joe,
Why did you send your camera to Japan for an overhaul rather than to the repairman in California?

the l.a. repair guy only does a few things on the rd1, japan gives it more of an overhaul and they cap the price to boot.
of course shipping is more expensive...

i could...but...i prefer to think that when i want to shoot with 2 bodies having 2 of the same body is ideal...and when i want to shoot with one body then the m8 would be great!

Yep.

The handling of the M8 blew away my RD1. I loved my RD1 until I got my M8.

Then, changing framelines was a PITA. That lever advance, and the time lag for the camera to get ready, was unbearable. And the RD1 rangefinder that always drifted. I unloaded the RD1 pretty quick.

That was "my mileage". YMMV :)

Good luck with the M8, Joe, but I think you might be tempting fate bringing that horse into the stable with the R-D1 twins. It might be I-love-my-wife-but-oh-you-kid all over again...

it may be awhile before i get the money all together...things are tight and i don't expect to sell any more kit to speed things up.

but it's nice to have a goal.
