I'm trying to get a profile picture up without success, 5kb seems an very low limit and I can't even compress a 100 dpi x 100 dpi image to less than 17kb on CS4, where am I going wrong? I've tried the FAQs, and 'helpline' but didn't get a reply.

Dunno, johnny. Does it have to be a gif I wonder? Welcome to the party anyhow!
I saved mine as a BMP file, 96x93, monochrome.
It took a number of tries. Got it to 3780 bytes. Used Photshop 6.0.

Ride, dive, shoot.
Just to be sure, you are trying to put profile picture that goes to bottom of your post, not the avatar that you see on the left of your post (more commonly used here)?

presize picture to 125x125 pixles. Go to user pc, select edit avatar, select option 2 and upload from your computer. You should be able to presize it in any photo software.

well, fair enough, but did I not find a box marked 'contact us' somewhere in the dungeons of the User CP? However, I might have been mistaken, it happens a lot... thanks for your help anyway.

O.K., I would have posted it earlier but I was beginning to think I was the only pilgrim around here who couldn't upload his own avatar ;-) First I abandoned the idea of using colour image (obviously it can be done, but I was running out of patience) and like your fine effort, used a B&W file, I re-sized my image in PS to the required 125pixels x 125pixels at 72 dpi (no point using higher def for screen). Then instead of using 'export' or 'save as' in the pull-down file menu I used 'save to Web & other devices' as suggested by Todd, and made sure I was saving as 'Avatar' in the 'User CP' - it is easy to confuse the 'Profile picture' which requires an even smaller file size, with the 'Avatar' - thanks Sug for reminding me of this. Thanks for everybody else's suggestions too. Brian, I think I managed to save as a JPEG too, using this method...
