However, the Online Photographer's article is new to us.
Lots of people are convinced, by the translation of Kaufmann's words, that it's over for the production of film M bodies. It would be nice to get a definitive statement from Leica. One of the Leica higher-ups is quoted in the thread I refer to, but his words do allow for much wiggle room.

Ride, dive, shoot.
No matter they stop making the film M or not, one thing that I'm quite sure of:
My MP will outlast me for sure (unless I lose or wreck it). Even my M2 might. Probably my kid(s) can use the MP as long as film is available.
So I don't worry too much.

I can't think of a reason for Leica to issue a definitive statement about analog camera production, one way or the other.

They manufacture in batches, they have enough, they want to make M9 bodies because of the demand.

I am quite sure when my kids grow up, their generation will be interested in new camera formats unknown to us at this point of time - most probably digital. Leica M2 or MP will probably end up as museum showpieces by then....

The best camera is one that still works!
I just wonder if it's actually practical for Leica to retain the ability to manufacture film bodies as they move into the new digital age.
It's all very well to say they can bang another few hundred units out when current MP stocks get low but do they really want to do that ... set aside machinery and tooling that's going to take up valuable space and only be kicked into life when it's needed?

Polaroid came back alive and kicking after it was killed off.
As for film, the Lomo kids and Japanese people will keep it going.
Don't get rid of a good thing.
The camera bodies on the other hand... ebay.

If it would be true ....
.... we would have seen the release of several last commemorative models, for example, "Leica MP, ein Goldstueck", with diamond soft release, sold in velvet lined ebony boxes, or similar.

Here's your chance. The list owner of the "Leica Forum" is asking for questions to ask Leica management next month at Photokina. See:

And Volkswagon at some stage will re-release the original air cooled beetle ... for sure!
Actually come to think of it they should ... that thing they're currently marketing as a beetle is hideous!

It's actually a mouse. A rejected design from Apple that was fed on steroids.

Well, maybe now that VW owns Porsche they can borrow some engineering and work out how to build a 4 cylinder boxer engine into the back end of a new Beetle and make it the modern equivalent in the same way that a new 911 is a modern version of the original.
