Anything with stable 6V will work - 4xSR44, or single 4SR44, some use even alkaline versions (not recommended, but people like unhealthy food

You can also check with "Yashica Guy" on the web. He sells adapters that allow use of readily available batteries. I just bought one for my Yashica G Professional and it works perfectly.

Oh thanks, Quick question does it come with a battery when you buy it adapter or do I have to spend another $5 for the battery?

No battery is delivered with the adapter. I like to support the Yashica guy when I can. I can remember very well when I bought my first GSN and spent hours and hours going through his website. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Yashica and there's always at least one of them in my drawer.

I'd purchased the Exell A32/A164 battery from here:
http://www.batterymart.com/p-exell-a32-a164-6v-alkaline-battery.html
It fits the camera and no adapter is needed.

Sorry, I can't answer your question.Just bought the battery adapter! YIPPY! Uhm anybody live in CA and can tell me how long it would take to come here?
I think it's nice you bought the adapter. I wouldn't have,...
but it's nice you're helping to support others.
I'm impatient and when it's so easy to rig up a battery for the GSN I just wouldn't be able to wait for the adapter to come in the mail.
The GSN is extremely forgiving for that tiny of a voltage disparity.
Anyway, I really like the Yashica's. They just have a certain look that I like.
Hope you have a good copy and enjoy it as much as I do.

Yashica Guy now does send a battery with the adapter, at least the one he advertises on his website. And it works like a charm. Great little gadget for bringing great little cameras 'back on line'.

The main problem with using the alkaline versions, in my experience, is that the "battery check" feature stops working before very long, while the metering, automatic functions, and "over-under" lights continue to function as they should. It seems that while the light meter and other electronics are indeed forgiving toward drops in voltage, the battery check circuit appears not to be, possibly because it was designed to check the voltage of the mercury battery, which was stable at original voltage until it was near depletion, while alkaline batteries exhibit a slow but steady decline in voltage during their useful life cycle.Anything with stable 6V will work - 4xSR44, or single 4SR44, some use even alkaline versions (not recommended, but people like unhealthy food)

Greyscale, seems it works just like you described, though for several reasons (couple of pennies, availability) some people go with alkalines. I don't recommend them, just noted it is possible. If one can not get silver oxide version, better he uses alkalines than throws nice camera into garbage bin because "mercury cells are obsolete and no replacements are available".
