How to have continuous numbering on the M9??

I did the latest firmware and now my numbering starts over with each card. Before that the numbering was continuous. I can't find it in the menu and never paid attention to the ability in the past to start new each time or to have consecutive numbering.

I have looked in the manual but can't find the information. it is easy on the rest of my cameras.

That sucks. I thought it was in folder numbering, but no it isn't. I swear I saw it somewhere too. I find everything by number- glad I've not had a chance to do the update. I'd contact Leica and see what they have to say...
 
Yes, I go by sequence and it is very important in my work. With film it was what it was but now with the ability to do continuous numbering, I can use it as a great and fast reference.

Do you reformat in camera, or in the computer?
 
. Forrmat a card
2. Take one shot
3. In the computer renumber the shot and the folder number - the first three digits must be the same e.g. Folder Leica 108, shot 1081234
4. return to camera
5. take one shot.

The file numbering is reset to 1081235 etc.
 
And now this has stopped working. My M9 has always been shooting as 300LEICA. I mistakenly put a Monochrom card in my M9 and cannot get the M9 back to my previous numbering. It continues on from the last Monochrom file number, even creating a new folder 560LEICA from the Monochrom ID.

I re-numbered, shot, and the camera is numbering on 560xxxx.

I deleted the 560LEICA folder from the card each time. A reset doesn't work. Even a reset with the correct last card doesn't work. What did I do?

Thought I was being smart using only grey cards for the Monochrom and orange cards fro the M9, till I ran out of grey cards and shot the Monochrom with an orange card "just for this test".
 
Update 2/18/17:

Not sure if there is something changed in the firmware with the replacement sensor, but the old method did not seem to work despite numerous tries. I did happen upon a procedure that did work.

1) Format a card in the camera
2) Check that 'Folder Management' reads 'LEICA'
3) Reset Folder no.
4) Make a picture. It should read L1000001.
5) Turn off the camera and remove the SD card.
6) Insert the card into a reader or your computer.
7) Navigate to the card, then to the DCIM folder. Rename the 100LEICA folder with the prefix number you wish. I use the first two digits of the camera serial number, so '390LEICA'
8) In that newly named folder, rename the picture file number. In my case 'L3900001'.
9) Eject the card from the computer.
10) Insert the card in the camera and make a picture.
11) Hit 'PLAY' on the camera, then 'INFO' to check that the new image is numbered correctly. In my case it should read 'L3900002'.

This was a lot of trial and error to get me back to numbering keyed to the camera. Hope I save someone a few handfuls of hair. 🙂
 
Just had to navigate to this thread to fix this again. Really hate this convoluted PITA to get the numbers to remain in sequence. I ended up with a whole lot of duplicate numbers between this M9 and the Monochrom, AGAIN.

Note to self: NEVER, EVER, EVER out a black card in the M9.
 
@sepiareverb - I just got my M9 back from sensor replacement and they updated the firmware. I kept trying the old method to change the file numbering but it didn't work. Fortunately, I stumbled across the method you outlined above. While I didn't find your description until after, it will definitely save others a lot of trouble. Thanks for posting such a detailed description.
