Electro 35 GS film advance opens shutter blades

I just bought a GS off ebay and assumed it would have some kind of problem. It looks pretty mint on the outside but am having a weird problem with the shutter.

I don't have any film in the camera. When I move the film advance lever the shutter moves and sometimes opens almost completely and will not shut until I press the shutter release.

Most of the time the shutter blades don't shut completely and moving the lense housing slightly (just the play in the lense, I have the same amount of play in my other fully working GSN).

So far I've removed the front element and put lighter fluid on the blades which has improved them a little but not much.

Can anyone shed some light on what could be wrong or what I should be trying next?

Oh, i didn't realise this came under the POD. Thanks, i'll take a look.

The POD de-synchronizes the master shaft - and hence can cause just about anything funky with the shutter and tensioning. Even if there is more wrong with the camera (and many have been soiled with grease in futile repair attempts), you won't be able to diagnose it as long as the POD is out of control.

hm, I doubt POD manifests such way. I can't prove it, though.

I think that you need to continue cleaning the shutter blades, as you said, the initial cleaning did improve things a little. My best guess is that some stickiness remaining on the shutter is keeping the shutter from closing completely, allowing them to be dragged open as the shutter is reset on film advance. I had a similar problem when cleaning a sticky shutter on a Minolta Hi-Matic 9.

The POD only affects the electronic aspects of the camera. What you describe sounds more mechanical in nature. The lighter fluid may work, but what sometimes happens is that it actually freezes the shutter up for a time. You will need to blow out the shutter with compressed air until it frees up. You may actually need to let it evaporate for a few days before it works again.
