Coolscan 9000

They've been continuously available in the UK, and only now seem to be disappearing. I just got one too and hope that they will continue to be made in batches and supported...

I had a 5000 for my 35mm. Later I got into MF and bought a 9000.
Compared to using the 5000 ( inserting the negs) I found the 9000 35mm holder to be messy and difficult to use and the scanning very much slower.
I ended up not selling my 5000 - which I had planned to do to fund the 9000. So I ended up with 2 scanners.

The 9000 or the strip holder?

5000 can do only 35 mm whereas with 9000 you can go up to 6x9. Both scanners will provide a very/equally good IQ from 35 mm film.

The 9000 strip holder is probably equivalent to the 5000 when you insert a whole strip or roll, but not as good as the FH-3 holder.

edit: I agree with 'thirteen' in that if you can afford to have both scanners, then 5000 is probably more ergonomic for 35 mm film.
 
Seems that 5000 is very difficult to find nowadays. I have heard about the banding problem in 9000, anyone can comment on this?
 
I saw that Nikon in stock since 2009, in 2010 i started to look and i might saw one in stock but i couldn't afford it that time and ended up with V-750, now i want to have this Nikon scanner no doubt but un-available everywhere [or still available somewhere if you can find?]

The banding problem was an issue with the previous model - the 8000. I used to have a 9000 and it's fine.

However can anyone compare the quality of 35mm scans on the Coolscan 9000 and the Coolscan 5000? Is it basically the same?

Not to be a troublemaker or anything, but I feel obligated to report that my particular 9000 does have the banding problem. I purchased it used a year tor two ago from a private seller, and fully expected it not to exhibit banding based on reports I read online that the issue had been "fixed" with the 9000. I have heard of a few other 9000 owners claiming the banding problem too.

Obviously, I am disappointed by this since it means I have to always have the fine mode (or whatever it is called) enabled in order to avoid the problem, and this increases scan times. On the other hand I love just about everything else about it! It is a very capable scanner.

I can provide sample scans if anyone wants to see what the banding looks like.

The 8000 bands unless you scan in super fine mode, but sometimes in very dark slides even in super fine mode some banding is visible, nothing serious though. Maybe it's the same with the 9000 (I've not used one myself)?

As far as I remember the banding issue occurred only when multi-sampling? Or was it the other way round?

There was some easy fix for it, it was just too long since I had the Coolscan to remember correctly.
