Can The Press rewind button on my M2 be replaced by the lever option easily?

I have the a button rewind M2. I was wondering how hard it would be to convert it to a lever type rewind M2, assuming I could get a spare parts lever from another M2. I assume I can't just swap out the button rewind for the lever one correct? Internal modifications must occur?

Thank you,
Gonzalo

It sounds a bit odd, but some people seem to like the early button-rewind. If the camera is in good condition it might be an idea to try and sell it, then buy a later model with the lever-rewind. Worth a moment to cost out the option anyway ! Good luck with your plans.

I would suggest you contact DAG. The lever mechanism causes a collar to move downwards vertically to cause the sprocket to release, and go into reverse. The push button might not have the same body casting holes (but I'm not sure). DAG would have the parts for both.

Youxin Yee did mine for me about 2 years ago.....He actually swithched the body shell...I think I paid maybe 40usd....I also had him do a CLA at the same time.....I have never had a problem with my m2 in regards to the body shells being swapped.....

I should state that I bought the m2 from a member here who picked it up at a local shop with a mint 50mm rigid for 750 usd....the body was already a user and it had some guys name engraved on the back of it. (not a collector camera)...I didnt mind putting a little into it to get it how I wanted it.....a big thanks again to MikL for that hook up....I just came back from Myanmar with that m2 and 50mm rigid and I absolutely love that set up....

cheers, michael

It does involve some internal manipulation on DAG's part. This is a Black Paint M2 I had restored and may just hold off until I need a CLA. Thank you for the help.

I wouldn't do it. The button rewind without self timer is prized nowadays for the major right hand gripping real estate. Maybe I had one film rewind snag for not keeping the button depressed. Every time the camera is opened for some purpose there can be problems. My last CLA was on an M6 that had to go back twice for further minor adjustments. Certainly you are right to wait at least until a CLA is needed. Swapping out a body shell for a lever rewind I would definitely not do. My button rewind M2 was serviced by a German in 2007 and it has been better than ever, but only minor things were done and the reassembly was perfect. I am sure he would refuse to do what you are thinking of. The nice black paint might inadvertently be scratched, which I wouldn't like.
