Heroes of Canadian Photography

Heroes of Canadian photography... are there any?

I can think of a few famous Canuck photogs. Yousef Karsh, Ed Burtynsky, Jeff Wall... however none of them really have the same reputation of the likes of HCB, W.Eugene Smith, Daido Moriyama, etc.

I searched online and found this old thread of famous Canadian photogs:

Only problem is, I've never heard of most of them!

And if there are no Canadian photo heroes, then why not? What would the reason be?

mostly because we only get 3 good months for shooting and then 9 months of shooting with mitts on...?

Good question. However, the best Canadian musicians are truly among the best: Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen. Forget about Celine Dion. I"m sure I'm leaving out many who are deserving.

Don't despair. Yousef Karsh, was no slouch.

I am not sure we need photo "heroes". Besides, in terms of contemporary art, Jeff Wall is about as big as it gets.

Hard to explain. I thought about using "famous" instead of "hero." But I was thinking, there are lots of famous photographers. Then there are some who reach another level, and their accomplishments become a model for the following generations.

My vote is for Burtynsky

Ed Burtynsky gets my vote. I was introduced to his work by a professor who happens to be Burtynsky's best friend. My independent study professor put together this huge traveling exhibit and Burtynsky was one of the photographers with work in the show.

I was working for the school's paper and, after being given a preview of the show, interviewed my professor (actually it was prior to him being my professor) and a few of the students who were working on the show. I was blown away by Burtynsky's work and ended up writing a couple articles about the show. It wasn't until Burtynsky came to speak that I found out they were best friends. His work is impeccable and inspiring and ... on a side note ... he's a really nice guy.

Boris Spremo, who shot for the Toronto Star for many years, and Patti Gower, another wonderful photojournalist who now does Freelance work, are among my Canadian Heros of Photography.

Karsh? Overrated hack. But a great self-promoter.

Canadians seem to look everywhere but here for heroes.
