possible problem with 50 hex - partial mystery frameline - help needed

Hey guys,

Got a possible issue with my new 50/2 hexanon. I am using it on my m3 ds (early one). Dont have another body to check it with and I have not yet run a test roll through it.

On to the problem ... Having mounted the lens on the body, when I focus, the lens seems to be bringing up the left hand part of a mystery frameline.

Basically, when rotating the focus ring from close up toward infinity, what appears to be the left hand side of a frameline that is smaller than 135mm shows up. It is a very skinny line. It shows up at around 0.9m and continues through to infinity. The line does not show up as I rotate the focus ring from infinity toward close focus.

Any idea what is going on? Might this have something to do with the limited close focus capabilities of the m3?

edit - the skinny line does not appear with either my 90 hex or my 50 nokton.

It has got to be the way you mount your lens. Try to twist and fix the lens faster. I always have this problem when I fix the hexanon on my m4. Took me awhile to figure out what pace I shld take to mount on the lens to resolve this issue. Hope that helps😉
 
That's weird. Not sure what the "frame" line could be since the M3 only has the 90 & 135 frames in addition to the permanent 50. Per other commenters, I've had lenses that brought up parts of other frames when not entirely mounted, but never encountered a mystery frameline.

By early DS M3 do you mean it doesn't have the preview lever? On some of my M bodies, a sticky preview lever has been the culprit for some strange frameline behavior; the cure has been to quickly wiggle it through its range. Not sure what you can do w/a body that doesn't have the lever.
 
Maybe the framelines mechanism on your M3 has some sort of problem.
Something similar happened to my M6. With a 50/1.4 some frames would
appear besides the corresponding to the 50mm field of view, while it
worked ok with other lenses. A CLA took care of the problem.

Tried again and I think it could be the left hand side of the 135 framelines. I cant be sure because this m3 does not have the preview lever. It is definitely not part of the 90mm framelines (mystery line is smaller than the framelines brought up by my 90 hex).

I am quite sure that the lens is fully mounted. It clicks firmly into place.

However, since only this lens brings up the mystery line, I guess it must be an issue with the lens?

Could be. I had the camera cla-ed by youxin in March of this year. I could send it back I supopse, but I was planning on using this lens / camera combination on an upcoming trip next week.

This is just a guess...but as sugggested, it may be a related to the frameline mechanism in your M3 . If your body did have a frameline lever and you wiggled it (moved it slightly) right or left, my hunch is the rest (complete) frameline would show up. Now whether it strictly due to your frameline mechanism or somehow that the lens flange is the culprit even though the lens is clicking in place, it may be slightly out of tolerance and not quite allowing 135mm frameline in mechanism to fully engage. It's hard to say without trying lens on another body....especially another similar M3, since the lens may work fine in regards to framelines with say an M4, M5 etc. At least trying it on another body is a start. Let us know what you find out. Thanks!

Only other body I could try it on is my e-p2. Since focusing is done on the sensor, I'm not sure that would really get us anywhere.

The lens is m-mount so I'm afraid I cant try it on my bessa r. 🙁
 
It's your body. And has no affect on the focusing accuracy.

Can be fixed easily at your next CLA. I wouldn't worry about it.

After mounting your lens, try to push clock-wise (when looked at the camera from the front) a little further.

Along the line of feriders suggestion,.
While looking through the finder, rotate the lens in both directions with the lens release pushed in. This will allow the cam to rotate and tells you if the lens has not rotated enough or too much for the mask to align.

You may have to grow an extra arm or mount the camera on a tripod to do this securely.

I held the release in and rotated the lens. I can see the whole frameline until I click the lens into place after letting go of the release.

After I have mounted the lens, I cannot rotate it any further. It is firmly in place.

I'm just going to ignore the little part of the frameline and have fun with the lens. 😀

There is likely a slight variance in the size of the cam that sets the frame line.
The easiest solution is yours.......ignore it & get along.
To fix it you would have to modify the mount on the lens slightly but the risk of screwing the mount up isn't worth it.
 
You could try manipulating the frameline preview lever after the lens is mounted. My M4 does this once in a while and a flick of the frameline lever usually takes care of it.

Sounds like the best thing to do is just ignore it. 😀 Definitely dont want to mess around with the mount.

My m3 actually doesn't have a frameline preview lever. It is too early for that. SN 737198. Not sure when they started making preview levers on the m3 models.
