Hi all,

My friend who bought a Summicron 50mm f/2, but its letters on front glass ring is very strange. He said it was the ver. 4 of Summicron...

I try to find its picture everywhere, but I failed. Could you tell me some of this lens, please!

Here is the picture of it.

And its price is $850, is it cheap?

Thank you all!

Same version as mine. Current optical formula and coatings, one version previous mechanical design (tab focus). This one appears to be cleaner than mine. Depending on the detailed condition of the lens, and in my relatively-uninformed opinion, the price is either spot-on or a bit high.

Thanks Semilog,

Actually, its pictures is very good but I suggested that it is not cheap. And the letters is not like Leica's style... I'm finding a Summicron for my M6, I prefer the rigid version but it is expensive now. On the other hand, I'm living in Vietnam where is hardly to buy one from the other countries. May be I try to talk with my friend to sell it. Mission is impossible...

I have that lens and the lettering is correct for that version of the 50 Summicron. Its an extremely good lens if its calibrated right. I ended up having to have mine adjusted by Don Goldberg because it backfocused slightly.

Outstanding lens, but check for lens separation. Original price was $550 (black ELCAN/Wetzlar) and $1100 (chrome Solms).
Two versions - one with a convex focus tab (early model), the other a concave tab.
Lens sn 3409xxx was made in 1986.

Leica's coatings have changed at least twice since then, but yes, the optical formula is the same.

Not what I'd heard, but of course there is a simple enough way to find out: I do have a spectrophotometer in my lab. I bet you're right, Marty.

If you have a reversion spectrophotometer it's easy enough, but you do need to get the elements out and make sure that the glass is the same so you can compare between lenses - I think you can assume safely that the glass types are the same between optically identical Summicrons (of course now we'll find out you cannot). You can even figure out where Leica single coated some internal surfaces.

I'd bought a Summicron Dual range 50mm f/2. It has a small scratch on the front glass, please show me some pictures from that lens!
Thank you!

Well, I can not believe how sharpen that lens is!
Here is my first sharpen testing with Summicron DR 50 f/2 + Kodak 100 out date.

Search this forum. There are many many samples from the 51.9mm Dual Range Summicron.
