The other week, i bought a Canonet QL17 for $40. The camera works properly, all shutter speeds and apertures. The lens seems clean but when i look inside while it's on bulb, there seems to be some kind of marks (like water marks) on the lens. Can these be easily removed? I haven't cleaned the lens thoroughly and im hoping that cleaning the rear element would get rid of this. The meter works too, tested with LR44 battery. What should i keep in mind when using LR44 batteries to get proper exposures in auto mode?

You can get to the inside of the lens if you have a a pointed lens spanner (about $20). It is easier to remove the rear element to get inside the lens. As for the battery, the Canonet uses a 1.35 volt MR9 battery which is no longer available. You can use a LR44 battery with an adapter, some of these adapters have a diode built in that will reduce the voltage to the proper level. Meter accuracy varies from camera to camera, regardless of what battery you use, run a test roll through your camera and see how it works.

You should use the proper tools whenever possible. I have serviced dozens of these cameras, sometimes the elements come loose easily, sometimes it takes some elbow grease. It is possible to damage the slots in the retaining rings if an improper tool is used, which will turn an otherwise good camera into a paperweight.

If an improvised tool doesn't work easily, don't force it. Go and buy or borrow a proper tool.

I ran a test roll through the camera after simply wiping the rear-most element with Windex. It removed some of the marks, so i guess they're just on the surface of the rear element. Something that seems fixable without dismantling the lens.

I'm having new troubles now with the film loaded. There are times when i quickly turn the lever to take a picture and the shutter won't fire. This happened a couple of times throughout the roll and made me miss some good shots. What could be causing this?

If you are shooting on "A" and the meter can't compensate for your shutter speed, the shutter will not trip. Adjust your shutter speed up or down until the shutter operates.

If you are shooting in mechanical (anything but "A") it's hard to say what the problem could be, it's something I haven't exprienced yet.
