Canon canoscan 2710, any tips?

Hey, sorry for the rumble... recently got a canoscan 2710, let's say an relatively old-ish scanner. I tried to set it up (i'm runing windows 7), pluged the scsi card in a slot on my computer's mainboard, instaled the canon software, already have vuescan... nothing! The win 7 autodetect tried to install something when i first lit it up, but failed and it doesn't detect any new hardware pluged to the computer :bang: . I read about it and it seems that the "latest" software is for win 98 :-/. What about vuescan? I know it works with almost every scanner. It hasn't detected the canoscan... Any clues? Anyone still owns this scanner? Thanks!

What's pse? On what os did it work? Yeah i read on the forum earlyer about your search for the drivers, i did that too and got 'em. Could it be the win 7? I read on the internetz that some chap is running win xp for the everyday use and win 98 just for the scanner to work... 😱
 
Canon is not good about supporting old scanners. Once they discontinue a scanner they seem to stop all software support including adding it to drivers for new OSs. You are probably SOL.

i was using windows xp at the time.
 
have you installed the scsi card drivers correctly? Is the device terminated correctly to be end of chain if it is end of chain. or have you added it on a chain and left another device switched to end of chain.

You got me in a daze 😀 I haven't understood a word you said. I just inserted the scsi card into the mb slot and i plugged the cable... Didn't know there must be done something like this. Could you be more specific please?

scsi cards require scsi card drivers. Windows have some generic ones but they don't work with all cards. The software that came with scanner should have scsi card drivers with it. But if that software wasn't written for windows 7 then drivers may not work. So goto canon site and download latest software and drivers and check that they will work for windows 7.

Scsi devices can be chained, i.e. you can plug one scsi device into another scsi device and then another so you can run several devices off one scsi card. Each device usually has an in socket and an out socket for this purpose. And each device has a switch or jumper plug. That switch or jumper must be set to say whether that device is in mid chain or end of chain. The install instructions should tell you about this. Check back of scanner for switch or little jumper plug. If its the only one in chain then it should be set to end I think. That is usually 0 or 1 and I can't remember which is which but the instructions should tell you.

Thanks for the detailed explanations! It's true, it has a socket in, a socket out and a sort of switch in the back with some instructions, didn't know for what purpose were writen there. I'll try making it the "end of the chain". Unfortunately, about the drivers, it's an old model and on the canon site the "latest" update is for windows 2000, also i received it without any driver cd, so no scsi card driver 🙁. I'll do my best to get it working. Cheers!
 
I looked at canon site. The scancraft software only goes upto windows 2000. That doesn't mean it won't work on windows 7 but it does probably mean the scsi card drivers probably won't. And the scanner driver itself may not work.

I would unistall the scsi card drivers and ask windows to look for new hardware. Be careful to note what it finds and installs and then check the scsi card status after reboot. If thats OK then maybe the scanner driver will work but I'm doubtful about that. The actual scan software would probably work if the drivers are working. Can't really give you anymore clues than that.

Can't thank you enough, you have enlighted me 🙂 I'll be sure to do that and keep poking around until i get it working.

You see, i thought that too, but aparently it did not finish to install properly the scsi generic driver. I've been searching and some people say that in vista and 7 is something wrong with the aspi suport, something about evil microsoft leting go of scsi suport or something like that. I'll try with the Adaptec driver if your solution doesn't work, and if that does not work either, think i'll get back to win xp.

I should have been more specific. First sentence covers XP, second is just fact. I saw FS2710 running under Win7, didn't ask how exactly.
 
you might consider buying a very cheap but up todate scsi card which windows 7 recognises or at least comes supplied with windows 7 drivers.

I know I had problems with an old coolscan scsi scanner when upgrading to w2K years ago. I had to change scsi cards to get it to work. Can't remember the exact detail now.

one other thing. The scsi card should have the manufacturers name and model code on it. If its there you can try and download drivers from manufacturers site. They are usually adaptec or symbios but could be others too.
 
Nailed it! It was the bloody support for the scsi card. Win 7 was trying to install it and failing at it too. Pulled out the scsi card from the mb, took the model from the label, searched the internetz. For future canoscan 2710 troubleshooters, the scsi card it's adaptec 2904, get it from adaptec.com. The driver will be a .zip format and after extraction won't be any .exe file. You have to go to "device manager", find the scsi card with "!", then click "update driver". You'll search for the folder where you unzipped the files, and update the scsi card. Have your scanner pluged and ready, turn it off, and then turn it on again, so win 7 will recognize it as "scanner device". Unfortunately, scancraft software won't work, but i have already purchased vuescan, so there is no issue there. Thank you all for the help and i hope this thread will help others too. So Win7 doesn't need ASPI?
Pity Scancraft isn't working in Win7, in Vuescan I don't like way adjustments to scan are made. Probably that can be learned 🙂
