That's funny. I must be the exception that proves the rule. AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G... That's it. Done. Done with the craziness of lens collecting, getting "spec drunk", wanting every focal length and every "classic" lens under the sun... aka "prime lens syndrome..." Pointless. You mean you really walk around taking pics, stop, swap this lens out for that? Rinse, lather, repeat? Nah. That's no fun.

"I've heard great things about this lens and brought a friend's home to play with this weekend. Can't believe it retails for around $200 - what a steal!
 
Actually for me, it is fun to experiment with lenses, to see what they're like and what I can do with them. Be that as it may, in the end I shoot 90% of my work with a 50. But I like having the tools when I want to use them.

this was my path to Nikonland as well. some FD-mount Canon's seem worth more as scrap metal than cameras anymore. so thats how I ended up, by curiosity, to play with film cameras.

but after studying a bit and realizing that Nikon F-mount basically is still the same than decades ago, switch from AE1/A1 to FE/FM was easy.

EVF/EVIL cameras have since changed the landscape a bit, and FD-lenses aren't totally "useless" anymore with digital. but its still a compromise compared to Nikons IMO.

I had forgotten how much I liked working with film cameras until I got my F2S. Now I need to get back into developing my own b&w so I can afford more goodies for my cameras. But I took the Retina IIIC out the other day for the first time, and will still shoot my other rangefinders. But when I really want to get serious, out come the Nikons. My next quest is a 28-90 Vivitar Series 1 in AI mount. I never could figure out Nikon's reasoning for the focal lengths on their zooms. But a 35-70 AIS works nice on my FG.

Well, if you are going to accessorize

Nikon F2 + DP3 + DS-1+ DN-1 + AR-1+ 55/1.2 with a CH-11.

Be sure to take it out of the CH-11 to use it with the MD-2+MB-1.
 
I hear you PF. For being as cheap as I am, I've managed to build an amazing kit overall. Right now I'm terribly smitten with my F2 but I picked up the FTbN the other day to check the meter on my new DP1 and was reminded that it's an exquisite shooter as well. Plus I have a IIIf & a pair of 4x5's? An embarrassment of riches, that's all I can say.

But I do know one thing - for me, no motor drives until I can afford a F4. I refuse to used the early Canon ones for the same reason but the F4 seems like it would be a whole lot like the T90 and thus I could see going that route. 😉

Good thing my toy money is expended for awhile LOL

Well, all the awaited bits have arrived & are quite nice. Well used but not abused so the price was right. The flash thingie makes my Vivitar 2800 go poof at 1/80th. The 35/2 O has been Nikon kit AI'd so if I ever get an AI body, I'll at least have one lens I won't have to stop down 🙂 The 105/2.5 P serial shows it's still a Sonnar based lens (yeah!). The 55/3.5 Auto Micro is a fairly early one from the '63 - '65 time frame but it fits on the PK-3 and appears to work fine up close and personal LOL. I've got them all in my bag with a bunch of Tri-X and I hope to spend some quality time tomorrow getting to know them.

And Brian, you're a bad influence. I caught myself checking MD-2 prices at KEH today...

William--from experience--I can tell you that the MD2 is a heavy beast!!
I does NOT add to the handling of the camera as does the MD4 for an F3.
You get the batteries in that MD2--and prepare for some weight!
OTOH--it really does look cool..be sure the battery holder is included in the pack, as you might have a hard time finding a separate one...

No MD2 for me. Too heavy & it's not like I'm shooting sports or such.

But I did send out more money today ... Nikkor-Q 200/4 at too good a price to pass up.

I really hope I'm running out of cheap lenses to acquire... 😉

50/1.4 Nikkor late pre-ai
55/3.5 Micro-Nikkor (fairly early auto-diaphram)
105/25 Nikkor-P (Sonnar type)
200/4 Nikkor-Q (enroute)
80-200/4.5 that's one heck of a zoom!

Sheesh, I've fallen hard. But I sure had fun earlier today shooting that 105 😀 Next up, learning if I've figured out how it meter's with some fussy Ektar 100.

I had an F2 many years ago and I took around Europe with me and had an exhibition of the shots. Also I shot some pre-pageant antics every year in my city and showed some of them. The F2 was terrific. I like the F3 and currently use an F100.

While I hate to point you this way, have you looked into a Nikon Rangefinder?

Before I sold off lots of my stuff I used Nikon SLRs for longer glass and Nikon RFs for wide and normal lenses. Handled close enough to each other that moving between them was VERY easy.

I really need to look into using my powers for good some day.

While YMMV, the amount of fun you have will not, it's EXTREME!

I've looked at the S'es & would love to someday get a 2000-S3 in chrome. However with the prices that even user S'es bring? Much less the glass? Not before my 9 year old is done with college :angel: OTOH, I have a very nice IIIf & Summitar to go with my nearly non-existant toy budget so I don't worry about it. 😉

Seriously, the only reason I am able to do this whole F2 & lenses is because no single piece has cost me over $100. Most have been half of that. Maybe a total of $400 for everything I've bought since the F2 was dangled in front of me early in December. Serious bang for the buck.

This thread has simply been a way to laugh at myself and have fun with that.
