Was walking around Shinjuku tonight to buy some film when I suddenly spotted this ad on the doorway of a Yodobashi store.

I can't understand a word of Japanese, but looking at the numbers, I suppose it says that it will come out on March 5 and will be priced at about 128k yen. Quite expensive!

Wow. That's substantially higher than the US price at current exchange rates...

I was looking to pick one up at Bic Camera when I'm in Tokyo in April... looks like I'll have to wait till I get back to the UK...

At Yodobashi with their card/point system you get 10% back on that price, making it ¥115200, or roughly 1020 euro/1391 us dollar.

With the current exchange rate still not a very good price.

I think you might be able to get it slightly cheaper at Fujiya camera or through amazon.co.jp though.
I'm really thinking about getting one.

Like with the Panasonic GF1, are the menus going to be in Japanese only if one buys the camera in Japan?

£864 : thats a whole lot cheaper than a new zeiss ikon not to mention a new leica. It's a snip, I'll have three in different colours with all the trimmings.

Woah, what are you paying for a Zeiss Ikon there???

They sell for 114,800 yen over here, which is a fraction cheaper than the X-100.

look on the zeiss website. 1,449 Euros or £1,228

and those prices include 19% VAT so from Japan you wouldn't pay that but may have to pay import duty and local taxes which likely expalins price difference.

I rekon European prices wil be higher than in Japan for the X100 because we will have to pay import duties and VAT. And they charge VAT on the import duty too. Tax on Tax. How do you like that.

seems pricey, wouldn't a Leica X1 be about the same or just a bit more?

I remember just a couple of years ago the Zeiss Ikons were going new for $900 at Adorama or B&H.

I live in Japan, but sometimes I think the camera prices here are a total rip-off. Some lenses are even cheaper in Sydney, where I normally live. The country's a joke. No wonder people aren't spending.

Anyway, I'm off to CP+ tomorrow in Yokohama. JapanExposures was already there.

Boys, as I type I'm in the queue for the X100. It's a long line. I haven't even had lunch yet. Hope I won't collapse here cos I'm off to see the CV exhibit next and check out their lenses.

American's almost always pay the least and Japanese pay substantially more in their own domestic market. That's just how it is, for new especially.

Finally got a fondle an X100. That thing just oozes sex appeal, if you ask me. And it looks even better with the hood on. It's about as gorgeous as these Shibuya chicks with their hot pants right up to their crotches even in the middle of freezing winter. The VF is die to for, clear and, with the EVF enabled, takes the picture-taking to a whole new level. Well, at least for me.

Here are some pics from my visit, with a couple of shots of unrelated stuff (but which are discussed elsewhere in RFF, like the new CV 35/1.2).

I have no idea who that old bloke is, but he was being interviewed onstage. I gather that he was one of the guys who took the camera for a test drive, even visiting Australia, I think.

Apologies for the poor quality iPhone4 shots.

What keeps you living here in Japan when the country is a joke ?

I wouldn't call Japan a joke, but I think all of us foreigners living here are occasionally perplexed as to how things work. This is often a very WEIRD place.

As I once told a friend, I hate Japan, I want to spend the rest of my life here.

What's with the aperture ring - was it the wrong way round?

Oh, great, you had to type the word "Leica"? Now the thread's going to go down in flames...
