I've just bought a Dual Scan IV. I knew there weren't any updated drivers, so I bought Vuescan. I plugged the scanner in and launched Vuescan. It gave me an error saying it didn't detect a scanner.

I went to Vuescan's website and followed the directions (i.e. Shut down computer, turn on scanner, plug in USB, boot). Nothing. I closed the program, unplugged the scanner, plugged the scanner back in, relaunched the program. Nothing. I've tried every combination of plug/unplug/launch/turn on/turn off, etc, etc, etc... Nothing. I bought a new USB cable and tried it all over again. Nothing.

What frustrates me is that every forum post I've ever read has said using Vuescan with OSX and the Scan Dual IV is a breeze. No setup required. Plug and play. This has obviously not been the case with me.

Any ideas?

Also, and I think this might be the key point, the scanner does not show up in the System Profiler. Which means OS X (I have version 10.6.6) is not recognizing that anything is plugged in to the USB port. Is there a setting I can adjust to fix this?

Any help you might offer would be greatly appreciated.

Does the scanner work at all? On another computer maybe? If it's not showing up as a device (even an unlabeled one) at all on the USB bus then there's definitely a problem somewhere.

Not to be flip, but are you sure the scanner is turned on? Is the green light on?

I use the exact same setup (Scan Dual IV, Vuescan, OS X 10.6.6) with no issues. It sounds like a hardware fault to me.

I'm on Leopard still, but I seem to remember having to jump through hoops the first time I used Vuescan with the Dual IV. It works without a hitch now. I wish I could remember what it was I did to make it play nice.

Make sure another USB device will work with the USB port. Then repair permissions using Disk Utility, shut down and start up. Plug in and turn on and look for it in the System profiler.

I wasn't able to install the Minolta driver, but I did finally get a Vuescan trial to work (on Snow Leopard).

I may shell out for the product, but I haven't decided yet.
