Ok, who's got an R4?

Dang and Damn to ALL of You for this Thread.... 😱

I was NOW PURRectly CONTENT with my M3 / 40 cron, 50 Lux, and soon to have 90 Fat tele
NOW YOu have me THINKING about an R Body with an 80m Lux ...arghhhhhhhh !!!!!

Thank You for the Pixs and Idea of Size...the 80 Lux
'Looks' FAB....sigh

Heh, heh...at $200 for a quality Leica SLR or a bit more for a later model, there is more room in the budget for great lenses to go with the M3 or the R body! You could literally buy 8 cameras for the price of the R 80 Lux!

Buy 2 R4 bodies and use one for backup, or a parts camera down the road. Imagine getting 2 Leica cameras in mint condition for $400!!!

I had an R4. My complaint about the R4 is that the exposure info in the right side of the viewfinder is illuminated by light from the scene being photographed. When there is not enough ambient light, the info goes dark. My R5 uses LEDs to light up the exposure info.

Better yet is the R6, which displays exposure info just like the M6: Left and right red lights you adjust for equal brightness.

The mechanical action seems a bit slow and "lazy" on my R5 and R6; I seem to remember it was similar on my R4. I sent the R6 to DAG, who was able to improve things a bit; but compared to my Nikons (FE2, FA, F100), they are just kind of "lazy." "Cha-clunk" rather than the quick "Clack!" of a Nikon. There is a bit of lag. I use the motor drive, which makes the camera much more responsive.

The finder quality is outstanding on all models, R4 through R7! The focusing aid is brilliant, and they have a diopter adjustment to customize the finder to your eye.
Edit: My R5 and R6 have the diopter adjustment. I don't think it was on the R4.

B+ to A- overall.

The 80 Lux has tempted me more than once.

Not to use on Leica R, but for my Nikon F. Most Leica R lenses can be cheaply converted to Nikon mount, Dave, and in my opinion, the Nikon F fits your M3 much better 🙂

Also have a look at the original Leicaflex. I came to Leica because of my dad who used an SL throughout my childhood - took it everywhere. A week ago, I just got this same camera back from Sherry, completely overhauled and now on its way back to my dad in Germany. Hopefully will tempt him to use film again, he now has a full frame Nikon DSLR.

Cheers,

Roland.

I've had 3 R4's and they all seem to have the lag on release. I think it's more to do with sounds made than function as all the pictures were and are fine.
I read somewhere that the best R camera was a Nikon F2 !
I like using my F3 in A mode with my 35 and 50 'crons.

Yeah, liked my F3's, and I still enjoy Nikons, especially the F and F2, but have moved on for now. I still prefer to have an all-Leica system(s) as I love the feel of the R bodies. AND the R4 will essentially cost me little to nothing for a like-new camera from an estate. And a backup camera from the same estate would only be $200.🙂

Now, the 80 lux, that is gonna be some kind of mountain to climb. Chicken or egg? I will gladly pay for it from the initial work I have lined up, but I need the lens to do the initial work.😱

OK, it could be that the prolonged sound is mostly on the mirror return, not the upswing. I could see that.

I wouldn't vote for the F2 asa the best R; probably not for the F3 either. I had an F3, and thought it too loud, and there was a lot of vibration upon shutter release. But I could vote for the FA, which has a very soft and quick mirror. And if one wanted to go with AF, I could vote for my F100, which is even smoother. I think they learned a thing or two about the mirror mechanisms, over the years.

been always a fan of R4 also, just based on looks I've seen in Internet. never used or even hold one though 😛

Here is some snaps I just took to get the feeling of sizes - mounted on R7 🙂

The Summilux 50mm f/1.4 is not at home but it is almost as big as the 80mm.
The 24mm 2.8 is Elmarit-R and the 50mm f/2 on the body is Summicron (Canada), cheap and very sharp lens! Virtually there is no difference between the Canada and Germany made Leica lenses.
Hope that helps.

b.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to get those images and posting them!🙂

You wouldn't happen to have some photos made with the 80mm Lux that you could post, would you?:angel:

Hi Dave.
Here I diged one portrait / snap quickly.. Not the best quality, Ilford delta 3200, too grainy for my taste. I'll try to upload a few more where I was lighting in the studio - you can check them in the gallery (I don't know how to link them) but I'll certainly post them here as well. Mind, I am a newbie photography guy but I have a lot of fun 🙂

Hope that helps a little.
I think the studio ones I shot on 2.8, and the snap portrait was on 2. Will look for some shots wide open to post as well.

B.

Thanks, Bobby... say you are a newbie? Well, if so, you are well on your way!!! Nice work.🙂🙂🙂

BTW, you have three nice lenses! Hoping myself to start out with a 28-70 zoom and later pick up the 80 Lux. The R4 will be here tomorrow!😀

I have an R4 with a very conservative lens set: 28 Elmarit, 50 Summicron, 90 Elmarit. I like that the whole set is relatively small and light, and quiet. I mostly shoot outdoors, so I don't need fast lenses (which is convenient, since I can't afford them) and don't want the extra size and weight.
All 3 lenses are exquisite in sharpness and tone. I do mostly 11x14 B&W wet prints. No scans except for sharing.
I have an R7 too, but it's heavier and (hard to describe) stiffer. I may sell it because I rarely use it.
I have a bunch of film SLR's, and the R4 is one of my favorites, and most used.

Hey, just noticed you have been around awhile with few postings. We gotta change that! Especially since you are a Leica SLR shooter!!!!😀 Your profile shows you are a cyclists, as well. This year, I am using a borrowed Trek 660 and hope to carry the R4 with me for some riding and shooting. Thanks for posting!🙂🙂🙂

I have poor eye sight and the .85x viewfinder magnification of the R4 means I can actually focus the lenses especially wide angles. I also like the SL2 but most my lenses are ROM so the R4 is the SLR for me.
