i keep playing with this idea in my head, even though i am highly satisfied with the rd1.

would there be a significant and noticeable difference in image (technical) quality?

My answer at this time is no. My situation is a liitle strange - I picked up an M8 and an R-D1 from an estate sale (didn't know the deceased - knew the executor). I have spent more time with the M8, but I am beginning to appreciate the R-D1 more and more.

I teach in a public school and take a lot pictures for the school yearbook. I don't do the traditional posed shots but instead take mostly candids in the classroom and at school functions. The R-D1 is proving to be great because it is both quiet and unassuming. The kids tend to ignore it.

All this being said, my LCD just recently went blank (I had shot less than 100 images). I am sending it to JapanCamera for a repair and CLA. My original intent was to sell the camera, but as it will be in great shape when I get it back I will probably keep it.

I guess I have an aversion to "putting all my eggs in one basket". Why trade two cameras you enjoy for one? What will you do in the event the M8 needs repair? Will you be out of luck or shoot something else until it's fixed?

These are my thoughts based on an admittedly short experience with both cameras.

No. - The R-D1 is my first digital RF and the only one I know of, that feels like a film RF. I thought about buying an M9 lately, but I realized, that it wouldn't be able to fill the gap. It would bring improvements in IQ, but in no way it can improve the handling. And since the R-D1 IQ is good enough for me (and in the seldom situations, where it's not, I use DSLRs or other cameras), I do not really need or want an M9. Maybe a M10... (what I really want, is an R-D2 with a decent full frame CCD)

Joe, I would sell one of them, save up some extra dough, and get an M8. I love my M8--it's my favorite camera--but if the X100 weren't on the horizon I'd probably re-buy an R-D1 as an extra body. I like the M8 better, but miss a lot of things about the Epson.

I wouldn't. Ofcourse I don't have a RD1 as I am perfectly happy with my GF1+20 1.7+M lenses.

Every now and then, I do think of looking closely at M9. 😀

the cost of the m9 and my salary will never see eye to eye...

if i were to sell the rd1s i would hope to also get an x100 somewhere along the way and it would be my back up/second body. i'm pretty sure i could live with the x100 alone if the m8 needed to be sent off for a repair.

but as stewart has pointed out, there is still lots of snow here and i'm likely just suffering from cabin fever...

The fragility of the RD1 finder drove me to an M8.

The crop factor of the M8 and the UV/IR filters drove me to the M9

Leica is driving me to the poor-house.

Personally, I'd really miss the reversible screen and those cool analogue dials on the rd1

Joe- I see you are selling the mu43 kit. Sell that and one of the Epsons for the M8. Having one RD-1 serves as back-up, and for taking two lenses out.

i have uv/ir filters on most of my lenses already, would need to code lenses though.
already used to crop factor with rd1.

i like the rd1...would like a faster buffer, better battery life...12 mp..

I agree with the others; sell one R-d1 and go get an M8. Then you have both.

With an M8 the focusing error will be smaller using fast
and/ or long lenses. But- I would keep one R-D1 if I could …
