Polarizer & IR Cut filters on M8

Hello, all. I have a question re polarizing filters and IR cut filters on a Leica M8. *Right now, I just have an IR cut filter on my CV 1.4/35 but am planning on getting a linear polarizer as well. So, do I stack the two or do I remove one bf using the other? *Also, if stacking, I assume the polarizer goes on the outside.

Finally, I'm planning on getting the CV 4.5/15 and both filters for it as well. In this case how would coding interact w the filters?

Yes, you must stack, as the polarizer doubles or triples the IR contamination. Pol on front.

For those that wonder why: Although some (very expensive) polarizers exist that function into the IR band, most if not all normal polfilters are only effective with visible light. So, as about 50% or more of the visible light gets cut out, the proportion of IR light hitting the sensor gets correspondingly larger. Polfilter in front, as most are multicoated and many IR cut filters not.

Interesting point. I guess I'll bother even less about carrying my polarizer now.

So, JAAP, does that mean that using a polarizer on an M8 without the IR cut filter might produce some interesting results in B&W, or is that just crazy? I don't have a polarizer to fit my Leica lenses, otherwise I would be out experimenting instead of asking.

Wow. Thanks for the info. I'll also look forward to using it w/out the IR filter and see what wild results I might get.

If you want that better buy a 093 filter 😉 I have bought a IR pass orange filter by mistake, I plan to use that for experiments in a few weeks when I will be in the mountains.
