I've been having some minor flare issues with this lens in certain difficult lighting situations, and also want to have the large front element better protected (or maybe just protect my peace of mind). What's the proper Nikon screw-in filter (preferably metal) for this lens?

Thank you! I've been doing a lot of street photography with my F4 and this lens but I'm always worried about it scraping around in my bag or if I slip on ice and hit the lens or something. I'll be sure to get a hold of this.

I've never been comfortable keeping the metal nikkor hoods on "in position" in a bag, that clip thing makes me nervous. If it should unclip... They seem fairly safe to me reversed though. Nikon's metal hood/cap setup is kind of an irritant, imo, even though I do like the hoods when they're in use. First, that clip thing, then only nikon caps fit on the reversed hood, and there is a gap. Not sure any of that makes much difference really, but it seems too fiddly to me. I use the metal hoods stored separately, or a *real* screw in metal hood. There's a bunch of them on ebay for not much. Just my 2c.

The HR-2 is rubber IIRC, the HS-12 maybe not? KEH has both for $6 and $23 U.S.

the 50mm f1.2 Ai-S has a 52mm filter thread... at least my version ;-)

if you're using this lens wide open, then a hood of some sort is pretty much essential. Otherwise, you'll get a pretty big loss of contrast (on top of what's lost because you're @1.2). I've been using the HR-2 rubber hood only because the metal hood would take up too much space in my bag and I've also heard that the HS-12 can cause vignetting.

I use the HR-2 on my 50mm F1.2 AIS.....it even holds a lens cap, more or less, when you collapse the hood..

Took me some time to find a HS-12. If you see one for a reasonable price, grab it. I think the story about vignetting from then hood is a myth. But the lens vignettes enough when not stopped down to give that false impression but it looks different from vignetting from a hood or filters.

I ended up purchasing a lens hood several months ago from ebay, the vented type with a 52mm thread intended for lenses like the Voigtlander 50mm 1.5
