My Zeiss 21/4.5 C Biogon (ZM) turned up today. Nice, the hood is on back order (next week). I have seen some with a round hood with the cut-outs. Aesthetically pleasing to me. The literature with the lens lists a 21/25 hood but also 25/28 as an accessory. Has anyone used the 25/28 cut out type and if so any probs with vignetting? Seems strange that a 28 hood is listed for a 21.

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks for the reply. Seems the info is correct. I spoke with Zeiss UK who confirmed the 25/28 can be used on the 21 4.5.
I intend to use a 46mm filter to protect the front element. This shouldn't cause an issue I would have thought.

Steve.

the round 25/28 hood works fine with the 21f4.5. It is a very compact lens and the big. square 21f2.8 style hood kind of defeats the purpose. My 21f4.5 is more or less stuck on a R4M and always in my camera bag - or on my shoulder. One of the best lenses in the whole Zeiss line-up.

then why develop the square hood? Seems odd to have developed a redundant hood. Is there a reason for the 21/25 square hood?

I have the square hood on mine, but that's only because it came with the lens when I bought it used. It's probably reasonably ok without a hood at all - a round one should be fine. However, I don't find the square one to be that intrusive ultimately - the finder makes the camera harder to store than the hood does in my opinion.

I have the square hood on mine and it works fine. I also have a UV filter to protect the front element and have had no problems. A great, flare-free lens - tiny and as sharp as they come. It's even fast enough for available light indoors if you have a brace.
