which do you think/know would have the most unique look on the rd1?
does anyone have images from an rd1 made by either lens?

I only had the 50/1.2 very briefly, but I've looked at images for both and I'd say it would have to be the 50/1.2 . Now whether or not you like that look is a whole 'nother story. (I didn't). The 50/1.5, on the other hand, seems like the lens that almost nobody could not like.

Here are a couple with the R-D1 and 1.2. I sold it, then bought another copy a year later.

sorry cannot help you... aprt from giving you a fantastic alternative with the nokton 50 f/1.1 which I own and works wonderfully on the R-D1

I like the Nokton and owned it for a short while. But it's twice as large as the Canon 1.2, which has at least as much character, if not as large an aperture. I have retained the Nokton 35/1.2, though, which seems to me really special.

The best camera is one that still works!
Seeing as one of the Canon 1.2's problems is fall off in image quality towads the edges I'd say a crop factor of 1.5 would sit well with it.

so many good choices...i have had the 50/1.1 and loved it.
i had the canons too, both the 1.2 and the 1.5 but i used them when i was still shooting film.
the 1.5 is nice and small and i do like sonnars. the 1.2 was the weakest of the 3 for me...in terms of sharpness and contrast but it could have been that copy.
i love the 1.1, despite it's size...it makes magical images.
maybe someday in the future when the camera budget gets healthier again.

I have a few pictures of both lenses used with the Epson R-D1/R-D1s.
Here's the Canon 50mm f/1.5 LTM.

I just got one today - unfortunately (for this thread), I'll be shooting it on an M8.
Can't wait to see how it does with portraits.

Joe, I'd say that if you're looking for contrast and sharpness, look as far away as possible from the 50/1.2 - I loved it for portrait, but was always cranking the contrast. PM or email me if you want some more samples - this is just what I have on flickr. I have more at home.

Whoa, shooting a wedding with an R-D1? Impressive.

Before the M8 was released, Sean Reid used to shoot weddings with the R-D1.

Joe, I've found the 50/1.2 to be soft at wider apertures on the R-D1, but contrast was Ok. I like the way colors came out, gentle and vintage-looking. The 50/1.5 is as good as any vintage sonnar I've used - rivals the Nikkor S-C, IMO. The Canon does seem to be noticeably warmer in color than the Nikkor, though.

Only one of those shots was an actual wedding. The last two were two different proms for local high schools.
I have never had a complaint about the results (I've been the 2nd shooter for 3 weddings and various other events), but paid work was the no. 1 motivator for moving to the M8. It's part time for me, but pretty dang important to have that extra resolution/image size for more critical shots.

Had both. By far prefer 50/1.2 Canon. But I had a good, sharp copy. Only sold it cause got 50/1.2 M-Hex.

I really prefer Nikkor 50/1.4 over Canon 50/1.5. And while I never used Nokton 50/1.1, I cant say, based on everything I have seen, that there is anything "magical" about it. But I suppose YMMV.

I will try both lenses out on the micro 4/3. No clue how lenses differ on different systems.

These are with the Canon 1.5 on the R-D1. I have never had the 1.2, so can't compare.
The do have the modern Zeiss 50mm 1.5 as well. I generally prefer the Canon, but the Zeiss is much more flare-resistant. If you have a chance to get the Canon Sonnar, I would go for it.

thanks guys!
right now i am trying to decide on one fast lens, mostly for winter/evening shooting, so i am not in a rush.
the wides are too $$ for me, leaving me to consider 40/50/and possibly even the new cv 75 (i am loving the 75/2.5 on the rd1).
