At last! Got my FED 5 working properly! Tests

After 6 months of owning my only rangefinder, a fed 5, and plenty of test rolls that revealed a lot of problems, from 2nd curtain being blocked shut, to tensioning the curtains to have proper exposure times, misaligned and dark rangefinder, got my 4th or 5th test roll out yesterday and voila, proper working russian technology. I tried mostly zone focusing to see how it handles, and steering clear out of side or front light because the industar 61 looks proned to flaring. Also i think the fed has a litlle light leak in strong light, but than again i used it without the never-ready case. Enjoy, and please comment 🙂

I have tried that, uploaded them on flickr and on my rff gallery also, none of that seems to be working... What's the problem??

Glad to hear that you finally got the FED working. I have to finish the roll in my Zorki 1 this afternoon to see if my adjustments worked or not and check that I did not mess up the focusing. To add images from you range finder gallery to a thread. Right click on the picture and choose copy images location. Then insert image into the thread by using the insert image button. Then paste the image location that you just coppied. I use a tabbed brower Firefox so I have multiple tabs open to make the copying and pating easier.

😀 Thanks for the help with the photos, of course i don't mind. Also, can anyone recommend me an eveready case for my fed 5? My original one is the never-ready type, and also a strap broke about 2 months ago, so it's kind of useless... Thank you!

Very nice! Glad to hear you got everything fixed and it's good to see some street photos from Romania. 😀 If you find a good alternative case, please let us know. I dislike the original one but I have some light leaks too in strong sunlight, so it's a good thing to have.

About the case, you can drill out the old rivet and find a metal snap-rivet of a suitable size, and attach that instead (usually with a hammer or special tool, or some of them you can sew). Try looking in sewing shops, or maybe the iron-mongers where you buy screws and nails and things like that.

I know it is on the long run, but don't forget i'm in Romania, i can't find all that is needed, at least in my town, have to order it online. So when i have all of the money, i'll buy everything including a good negative scanner. Untill than, i'll shot anything i can get my hands on and process it at one of the local labs 😀.

For rivets, also try shoe/leather repair shops. They may replace a rivet inexpensively. However, if it is the strap, be careful, as the whole strap's leather may be dry rotting. It will be better for a leather shop to make you a new strap and attach it.

Thank you for the +! I'll take your suggestion into consideration given the fact that i have a shoe shop nearby. I'll give up on the strap because it's rotten, as a temp replacement i found a texil one that has clips and can be attached on the case. I have to mention that this fed was bought in the mid 80' "brand new" when in Soviet Russia by my girfriend's grandmother. I even have the original booklet in russian, signed and stamped by someone responsable with the warranty. In another order of buisiness, i saw a neglected lubitel at the flea market where i took the first two photos listed here, might as well be the next restauration project after i have the fed sparklin' new .
