I thought my M3 and M2 had VF flare because the patch always blanked out when taking portrait shots. Then I thought it might be because my eye wasn't centred properly in the viewfinder eyepiece.

Today I realised that the reason I can't focus when the camera is held vertically is because I naturally rest one finger over the second RF window :bang:

I never had this with the LTMs!

After your first para, I expected to read "I couldn't focus because I wasn't even looking through the VF :bang:".

Good thing you didn't say that, but you were close. 😀

Everytime I get my M6 TTL out of the bag I always put my finger on the window and have a greasy finger mark to be cleaned. Too many years of care free SLR handling.

This is an M3! The ridges around the VF and RF windows might well be there to make it idiot-proof. Well, Leitz, they went and built a better idiot.
