Saw this on another site regarding early Kodachromes. I guess that those old meters and mechanical shutters were just horrible. After all, there isn't one good image in the set.

It always gives me a bit of a smile when someone frets over the use of mechanical shutters with slide film.
 
I've seen a few similar ('chrome 4x5) on Shorpy's site - well worth a look. The lighting on those interior shots (and a few of the outside shots is striking - those photogs knew what they were doing.
 
The exterior shots were sunny 16, which, if you know its rules, is still more accurate than a light meter (especially in California).
 
All this done prior to chimping a digital camera, correcting a RAW file or even pulling a Polaroid. They knew their craft and knew it quite well!

They, just like every other conscientious craftsman/artist who has ever lived, did they best they could with the technology available to them. The "good old days" have never existed.
