I'll be getting my hands an an Autocord shortly. As most of my travel is by bike, I want a sturdy case I can keep in my backpack. Seems like an original leather case is not an option. I was thinking a small metallic container, like an old style lunch box, and line it with foam.

Has anyone come up with something along these lines?

Sounds like it would work. I'd recommend a decent neck strap though. Trying to handle a "lunchbox" and lid and removing or inserting the camera at the same time is fraught with possibilities for dropping something! Same applies for adding lens hoods or filters. Much easier and more secure with a neck strap.

Where will you be carrying the camera while on the bicycle? (I'll assume bicycle, not motorcycle, which creates an extra level of vibration). I try to keep a camera bag on my body when biking so that I provide another layer of shock absorption; I'm going to 'float' over bumps for my own sake as much as possible.

And do you plan to carry the camera off the bicycle? A metal case in a knapsack, bag, or on a strap over the shoulder can be a problem. My experience with hard cases while roaming is that they are uncomfortable and unwieldy. For moving from site to site and setting up, they are great. But carrying around in the field, they are somewhat clunky.

I have a Lowepro Rezo 160, I think it is called. It holds an Autocord (or Yashica-Mat, or Rolleiflex) in its main compartment with some spare room. I've added some extra divider pads that I've collected for more padding and to have the camera sit snugly. One divider leaves a slot at one end for a lens hood and some filters on the other side. The camera strap adds a layer to the top.

A soft(er) case like this goes in and out of a knapsack much easier. If I am going to put a camera in a pannier on the bike itself, I usually wrap the bag in a sweater or such.

Well, a metal lunch pail might be cheap enough to give a go. But again, I find hard cases a bit clumsy to carry all the time.

I'll post pics when I get home, but I converted an old CD storage case by lining the interior with thick insulating foam. It's a perfect fit for a TLR and a few accessories (I keep the hood and a rolleinar with it). I slip my CD/TLR case in my messenger bag and I'm good to go!

Here are some pictures of my Caselogic CD case transformation. Not a looker, but very functional and easy to slip in my messenger bag. A Sekonic meter usually sits on top of the camera, keeping it from shifting around.

The foam inserts came from a shipping box I had at work, the Caselogic survived the 80's in the bttom of a box in my attaic, and a bit of carpet tape married the two into the contraption you now have before your eyes.
