I ordered an 8gb Sandisk SDHC card from Amazon. The picture looked like the usual Sandisk card, with red and blue colors. What I got was a card marked Sandisk 8gb SDHC, but with a white on black color scheme. It also has a 2 in a circle; class 2, apparently.

Questions:

1. Could this card be counterfeit?
2. What is the meaning of class 2? Is it a lower quality than a 4?

I'm thinking I should return it.

I received similar black on white 4GB SDHC Sandisk cards with an audio recorder recently. Never seen them before but bought from a reputable source, and they work.

The Sandisk cards used to be blue plastic, but nowadays are black. I've got a couple here (Ultra 2GB, class4), that have got a dark grey label with red and white lettering/logo.

Was it from Amazon or just sold on Amazon by someone else? I'd think chances of Amazon selling a fake card are very slim while I've been sold plenty of counterfeit books by Amazon resellers.

Did it come in retail packaging? Or just a plastic case in a white cardboard sleeve?

If it was the latter of the two, you may have gotten a bulk retail package item. For instance, Company X sells you a device and includes an SD card in the packaging. You would get that card. They are the same inside as the normal cards, but because they're made for bulk sales or to be included with another item, they have a different color scheme.

Also, a lot of the SanDisk cards of late don't feature the blue plastic. To be safe, I'd look at reviews from other users for that seller and see what they're saying. If others have discovered their cards to be counterfeit, chances are, yours is too. But if it works, then I'd just go with it. You didn't get a particularly fast card. If you had tried to purchase a Class 10 and it was a counterfeit, you'd most likely lose speed, but since you're only in a Class 2 you probably won't ever know the difference.
